Grandmother's rage didn't subside. She still had that look in her eyes. As we waited in an abandoned building for whoever she called upon, I studied her movements. They were deliberate and silent as they had always been, but they lacked the sense of grace and poise she had always kept as long as I had known her. I didn't know if my human side was being unleashed because the demon was sealed, or if my mind was lost in the void, but I was worried about her.
I was more so worried about Julie. Pain struck my chest as I thought of her beautiful face. I had no idea what was happening to her or if that ugly monster was with her. I ground my teeth. Julie was the only reason I was still with Grandmother after her vicious display. Grandmother was my only hope of getting to her.
"Hello Mother!" called a voice. I snapped my head up. There stood a man who shared resemblance with my father. Albet, he was stouter than he and lacked groomed hair. It was messy and in curls around his head. Faint memories of him filled my head.
"Cain, where is your older brother? We need him too." Grandmother bit her lip, but embraced the man. I assumed these were my uncles. I remembered the holidays with them when I was little, some forty years ago. They had stopped coming when Grandmother let my father move in with us.
"I am here," said another man. He was tall, lanky, and soft spoken. Uncle Harland. Grandmother hugged him as well, and started to speak.
"As you two know, he is back. It pains me to say this, but I have let William be childish for far too long."
"The baby is always spoiled. I called it, and no one listened to me. No, never listen to the middle child," Cain whined.
"You were pretty spoiled as well," Harland countered.
I stepped forward as they were about to start bickering even more. "This isn't helping. How are we going to get Julie back?"
They all looked at me. "Julie?" Cain asked. "That silly human with the eyes? We can't bring her back yet, not with Mister Psycho on the loose. He wants those eyes. He wants to control this realm. Things are a little more important than that."
Grandmother nodded when I looked at her with anger. "Julie and Vincent need to stay where they are safe for now. He won't stop until he has the Power of Life and Death and the only thing stopping him is that realm."
"We need to stop him before it's too late," Harland murmured.
"We need to kill him, which is why I need your help," Grandmother stated, looking at her sons with an expression more pained than angry in that moment.
I ground my teeth. "You are being ridiculous! The safest place for Julie is by my side!" I clenched and unclenched my fists. She couldn't be serious. She couldn't think leaving her with Vincent, with that monster, was the best option.
"We need to figure things out with him right now, things with your girlfriend later, kid," Cain said as he pulled out a cigar.
"The safest place is with Vincent," Grandmother told me.
"He's the stronger of the two now."
"I think he was always stronger in heart, don't you think?"
"Sure he wasn't demon-"
"Stop!" I screamed through the endless mocking. They were against me as well. Everyone turned to that half blood, filth of the earth. How dare they say Julie is safer with him? How dare they say he is stronger?
I spat at their feet and left them all to rot. I would find my own way. I would save Julie by myself. Nothing would stop me. Not even those three fools, or my father.
