The Easier Way

The first time....it had been tough.

A new sense of awareness had filled him, his brain, which once just knew the calm of moonlight, the energy of sunlight, and the cold of the ground, now had to deal with sight and sound. Every touch sent needles screaming into his head.

Vague ideas turned into sharp thoughts.

It had been painful. The reds and greens of the forest bleed together into a dizzying array of light. The buzz of insects overwhelmed him with their shouts.

His first few days had been a blur of pain.

By the first week, he was able to think, to hear without the pain.

By the first month, he was able to see and move, basic noises would come out of his mouth.

All throughout that though, a constant pain filled him, it seemed to be borne out of his abdomen. It clawed and scraped through his throat and poured onto the moss of the forest floor.

It would only be much later, that he would realize that that foreign feeling was starvation.

That was his first.
