They had electives after Physics. Percy felt bad for leaving his girlfriend alone in the lab, but he knew it was for the best. She hated interruptions.
Percy was the captain of the school swim team which currently only consisted of him, Tyson, Chris, and Grover.
He plunged into the cool blue water, and the water ran over his body momentarily chilling him. But Percy was never afraid of swimming and found water fascinating for some reason. Like he had some connection with it beyond its depths.
"Tyson, you are splashing too much water outside the pool." Percy played captain to his step-brother.
"And Grover that stroke isn't flapping arms in the pool. You're supposed to do this." Percy showed Grover the correct stroke.
Along with captain, Percy also coached his team. The pool was small, yet clean and best for practice. Percy swam some laps, and then Tyson did a flawless butterfly lap. Percy was known for his underwater swimming and could hold his breath for about ten minutes.
It had required years of swimming. Their practice session finished early mainly because they were hungry for lunch.
As Percy and the others were about to enter the school building, they heard the fire alarm go off. They marched out, pretty panicked to the open ground. Almost the whole school had gathered there in twenty seconds. Grover rushed out to Juniper, while Chris leapt like a deer to a grouchy Clarisse.
"Percy, Grover, Tyson? Thank Goodness!" Paul, their class teacher exclaimed, "Now only Rachel, Octavian, Annabeth and Reyna are left! Please go and sit on that step with the rest of the class! Don't panic!"
Percy hadn't heard the rest of the sentence.
Annabeth was still in there?
"Oh no. She must be somewhere in the crowd, Percy." Paul said, his head bouncing.
Percy hadn't realized he had spoken out loud.
Annabeth wasn't out in the crowd of students. She was in her 'zone'. The zone where she heard nothing, felt nothing, and could only be removed from the zone if she had finished her task or somebody shook her.
She was still stuck in the school, where the fire was.
"She's in the school!" Percy said robustly, "She's up in the Physics Lab!"
"The fire engine is coming in two minutes. Hold on Percy." Paul said, before disappearing to talk to their Principal.
Sure.
Percy could hold on for two minutes.
120 seconds.
120000 milliseconds.
No.
He.
Could.
Not.
Without anybody noticing, he slipped out of the school grounds, and unlocked the pantry exit, to find Annabeth Chase.
