I stood in my kitchen staring at the wall clock as it ticked by ever so slowly. I was ready and it was only 6pm, what am I going to do until Jack arrives? I found myself walking circles around my kitchen island with my anxiety levels through the roof. I haven't been on a date with anyone since Bobby-Lee and lets just say Bobby-lee's idea of romance was a trip to the pub to play pool with the lads. So I think its going to be nice to go out on an actual date. Bobby-lee was a graphic designer and what appealed to me was his bad boy ways.
He hated conforming to societal norms and it drove me crazy with lust and excitement. He found romance unimportant and our relationship was mostly based on great sex. I remember the first day we had wild passionate unadulterated sex, it was after hours on his design table at the technology school he taught at. We had set off the alarms and unbeknownst to us the police were called. The poor table didn't hold up and we went crashing to the floor with me screaming his name in ecstasy and to the sounds of police sirens wailing in the near distance. I had never felt so alive as I was arrested by a fellow co-worker, who had taken the pleasure in leading me to Brian's office as everyone stood applauding my out of character behaviour.
Bobby-lee and I had been dating for seven months when he proposed. I was so in love with him that we started planning our future together. Like having kids type of talk. I never thought that the idea of having kids would pass through his head, let alone be spoken about out loud. But, everything must've gotten too real because he left and never came back. Now, he's engaged to a man and I'm going on a date with...a doctor. I guess I won that round.
"What are you doing?" Damon's voice invaded my thoughts and my apple went flying across the other side of the room. I scream in shock as I stood with a hand across my mouth.
"What the fuck? Damon, what are you doing here?" I yelled as I tried to steady my rapidly beating heart.
"Jeepers, calm down. I came to get butter." He said casually as he walked to my fridge to retrieve the butter. "Are you okay? You seem kind of tense."
"Tense? You just scared the living daylights out of me! How did you get in here anyway?" I said with a angry huff.
"I have a key. You gave it to me last christmas? How can you not remeber?" He asked with his eyebrows raised. "Why were you walking around the counter?"
"Don't change the subject! When did I give you the house key?"
"Last CH-RIST-MAS! You said and I quote, 'Here's my key, take it, you're family.'"
"I don't remember that." I whispered more to myself than to Damon. "Wait so is it you that refills Lisa and Bart's food and water bowls?"
"Yes! I swear you have the memory of a old person." He paused and then gasped dramatically. "Are you wearing make-up at 6.25pm at night?"
"Yes."
"Are you going on a date?" Damon asked as he looked at me as though he was solving a murder case.
"Matter-of-fact, I am." I stated as I poked out my chin in defiance. He eyed me carefully as his eye's roamed up and down my body like I held the answers to solving cancer. He narrowed his eyes and stared at my shoes disapprovingly.
"Let me guess, first date. Pizza or Fish 'n' Chips, paired with wine for Mr fancy pants and beer for the she-male, yes, I am talking about you. Picnic? No...Maybe. Daylight saving, its definitely going to be outside so Mr fancy pants can kiss you as the sun sets. Classic. How romantic!" He exclaimed as he wrapped his arms around me and hugged me securely. "Then home to make love, I'm a genius!"
"Yeah, and kind of gay." I stated simply. I stepped away and walked to the fridge to pour me a large glass of wine. I'd hate to admit it, but I was starting to become nervous. This is Jack Thompson we're talking about here. He's so sexy and well defined. He has so much going for him, and what do I have? An unused law degree, two dogs and a mortgage. Speaking of those dogs, where had they gotten too? Oh god! This was a bad idea. "You're right this was a bad idea." I threw the wine back quickly and cringed as it burned all the way to the pit of my stomach.
"When did I say it was a bad idea? Its a bloody great idea! You deserve someone nice, and he seems nice." Damon eyed me carefully and reached for the wine glass I was holding onto tightly in my hand. "Easy tiger."
"He deserves someone better! Like, like, like. Someone like Caz! She can be a good wife, I barely know how to bake potatoes." I started to hyperventilate as I fanned my face quickly.
"Where did wife come into this?"
"I suck at meeting new people, so meeting his parents is off the table. I'm either way too aggressive or way to nice. Ask Jack, he would know." I hadn't even realised I was pacing until Damon grabbed me by my shoulders and shook me back to life.
"Calm down! Woman, you're scaring me. Just sit down and I'll get you a glass of water, and a paper bag." I looked at him with wide eyes and realised this was probably a nervous panic attack. I clutched at my hair and lay my head down on the bench and started to steady my breathing. Damon plopped the glass of water in front of me and pushed the paper bag in my line of sight. What was happening to me.
"Thank you." I said as I felt myself beginning to relax. "I don't know what hap-" Before I could finish my sentence the door bell rang and a deep seated sense of dread washed over me. I looked at Damon and whispered quietly. "Can you see who's at the door?" He looked back at me like I had gone crazy before exiting the kitchen.
"Ah, Jack! Good to see you." Damon's voice said as it floated down the hallway. What the fuck is Jack doing here at 6.30, he said he will pick me up at 7.30! Does he not know how to tell time? I stared at the wall clock intently wondering if I was going crazy. "Yeah, can you just wait here, I'll go and get her for you."
Damon's foot steps came up the hallway and he popped his head around the corner. 'Its Jack.' He mouthed.
"He said 7.30!" I mouthed back. I pointed to the wall clock and then threw my hands up in the air dramatically.
"Pisst, it is 7.30. You're clock is wrong. You haven't changed your clock!" He whispered back. Oh for fuck sakes! I hopped off the stool and straightened my spine. I am Cameron Alexandria Henderson, I am not my fathers daughter but I was raised by him and I will go on this date. I walked up the long hallway purposefully and opened the door wide and there he was. The sex symbol himself.
"Jack, its so good to see you here on time." I said coolly.
"What is that suppose to mean?" He asked with a slight smirk.
"Oh nothing personal, just that emergency doctors take longer to see a patient than it does for a old man on Viagra to get off." There you have it, overly confident and I make myself look like an asshole. "Excuse me while I go and marinate in shame."
He laughed a deep rich laugh before he reached forward and grabbed my face. He kissed me passionately and I felt the butterflies dancing around happily in my belly. He is so sexy. Thank you, good god!
