Severide's POV
I woke up and looked the clock. I had an hour before shift. I got out bed and got dressed in my normal uniform for shift. I packed a bag of clothes and walked into the bathroom.
I jumped in the shower, half hoping Lacey would show up again like she did yesterday. But I knew she wouldn't. I washed up, got out and shaved. I brushed my hair. I put on my clothes and checked my phone.
Shit.
No messages from Lacey and it was 7:30. I had a half hour to get to the fire station.
I rushed out, grabbed my bag and ran out to my car. I jumped in, started it up and went to the fire station.
"Morning, Severide." Chief Bowden greeted me.
I nodded at him. "Morning, Chief."
He nodded for me to follow him. "You're in time to meet the new paramedic."
I sighed. "Listen, Chief, "I insisted. "I'll meet her soon enough. I just need to clear my head right now."
"Severide." He warned. "Everyone is going in the meeting room so she can introduce herself."
I sighed. "Alright, Chief."
He smiled. "Good. You're the last one. Let's go."
I followed him into the conference room. He took position behind the podium. Everyone was there from Squad and Truck.
"Good Morning everyone." Chief started his normal introduction ceremony. "We have a new paramedic joining us. This is her first time in a Chicago Fire House, so let's make her feel welcome. She's family now."
Everyone clapped as we waited for the new girl to come out.
The door from behind Bowden opened and my jaw dropped when I saw who walked out.
"Hi, guys." She smiled at everyone then paused when she made eye contact with me. "My name is Lacey." She looked away from me to everyone else. "I moved to Chicago from Nebraska after my husband died in an accident."
At least I was the only one who knew she was lying.
"I don't know if any of you guys remember me." She smiled warmly at Mills which made me want to punch him in the face. "You guys rescued me from an accident. I was pregnant and lost my daughter in the accident."
Everyone seemed to stop breathing. Bowden looked like he was going cry. I felt like I was going to also. Watching her in front of everyone, talking about Mckayla.
"I became close with a couple of you from this house, and Peter Mills asked Chief Bowden to give me the paramedic job. And I couldn't be thankful enough. I'm really hoping that you guys accept me here and we all have a great time together." She then looked back to me.
I'm pretty sure my mouth was hanging wide open because she bit her lip and tried to hide a grin.
I shut my mouth and stared at her. Why didn't she tell me she was the new paramedic.
Now I understood. I want to, but I can't.
She wanted to be with me, but she couldn't because we were working together now.
Well hell, we still could be together. Wait, why was I thinking about being together? We were just friends.
"Alright guys." Chief said. "Let's make Lacey feel welcome." He smiled at her. "And get back to our duties."
Everyone clapped then got up and left. Everyone except for me and Lacey.
"Why didn't you tell me you were the new paramedic?" I asked and crossed my arms.
