»You what? I'm sorry, could you say that again, please?«
»I kissed Fernando,« Lorelai repeated hesitantly, fidgeting under Jane's enquiring — burning — look.
»Why?!«
Lorelai only shrugged. How was she supposed to find the words for Jane to understand? She didn't even get it herself.
Jane, Diego and she were having breakfast in the kitchen of their apartment. A freshly unpacked edition of the book ›Flirting for Dummies‹ lay next to torn apart wrapping paper. In front of Lorelai sat a plate full of her special birthday breakfast that Diego had prepared for them all.
It was the 26th October and Lorelai's twenty-second birthday. The yellow and black flirting book had been Jane's present, of course. The brand new set of chalk pastels on the chair beside her had come from both Jane and Diego. Two simple white candles substituting the candles on a cake were lit and standing in the middle of the kitchen table — Lorelai didn't like birthday cakes, opting for Diego's infamous pancakes instead.
»That book couldn't come at a better time,« Diego said nonchalantly, shaking his head as he took another bite off his portion of pancakes, which were blue. Diego used special food colouring extracts to create these specialties, all natural of course. They were a big hit at the hotel he was working at. And extremely delicious, of course. Lorelai thanked the universe that it was Diego's free Sunday — otherwise, he would have had the breakfast shift. And she wouldn't have this wonderful birthday breakfast.
»Hear, hear!« Jane scoffed. If you could take a sip off your coffee angrily, then in that moment Jane had perfected that action. »You, my dear friend, are a walking catastrophe waiting to happen.« She pointed her fork at Lorelai, a piece of pancake (red) attached to it.
»How come I'm the catastrophe?!«
»So you're going to go out with him?« Jane wanted to know, ignoring Lorelai's exclamation. The Irish girl gave her a scrutinizing look.
»I'm thinking about it, yes,« Lorelai replied, turning her attention to the pancakes in front of her; green. Her favourite colour, after yellow. No one said anything after that. Finding the lack of outrageous response somewhat worrying, Lorelai looked up at her friend again. »What?« she asked. »He's a nice guy!«
Jane just shook her head. »Oh, you know exactly what I think about this. You're just trying to prove a point here.«
Lorelai rolled her eyes. »I know I should have never said anything about this,« she mumbled, annoyed by Jane's innuendo regarding her hidden »feelings« for Neymar. Like she needed to prove to anyone she wasn't interested in the footballer. Which totally wasn't the case.
»Your timing is so off, chica.«
»What does timing have to do with this?«
Not a second later, the doorbell rang.
