I was typing a document when three soft knocks came on the door.
“Yes, come in.” I replied, and the door opened.
It was Oaklyn. She had a navvy blue, A-line shirt and a white elbow-sleeved shirt on with her hair packed in a low ponytail.
She walked up to me, placing a load of file on my desk. “Go through this, ma. And I also want to remind you about the meeting at 11:00 a.m.”
“Ugh!” I stopped typing, raising my head up a bit. A pain stuck through me, hearing her last words.
“What is it, ma’am? Is everything alright?” She pulled closer to me in concern, and I paused a hand up to stop her. She might end up hugging me if I don’t. I dropped my hand from my forehead and rolled my eyes at her, disgustingly.
“I’m fine, okay?” my lips quirked to the side as I ordered. “I won’t be able to attend that meeting. Tell Mr. Desmond to attend to the customers and... I don’t want any guests as well. Cancel my appointments for today and tomorrow.”
“Okay, ma.” With folded lips, bowed in response and looked a little pained but I don’t care. I didn’t bother bugging myself about how she felt. I already have a lot going on in my mind.
I focused my gaze on the hp laptop, sitted in front of me while Oaklyn stepped away. She closed the door, and I shut my eyes. As a breath of relief rushed out of me, I closed my laptop. Reading was a waste of time, writing was pointless. I just can’t work right now. The only thing that comes in is the thought of Adam. What if I don’t meet him? Would this be the end of our relationship? It’s the second day now. I feel so lost without him.
Getting up, I slipped off my black swivel chair and strolled round my desk. It was bulky. I had a lot to do, but right now; I don’t get it. Something to take me out of the office is what I need. I’m fed up with this lifestyle already. Watching through the pane of glass windows. I watched other skyscrapers in Manhattan. The city is as crowded as my mind. I wonder if every other business owner goes through thoughts like mine.
“Evelyn! Evelyn!!” Somidah called, and I was off minded. She closed the door behind her and tread towards my desk.
“Evelyn!” She walked to me, grabbing me by the shoulders and shaking me vividly so I wake up from the daydream.
“Evelyn!!”
“Uh!” I finally turned to her, shocked. My dull black eyes danced at hers.
“What’s wrong with you?” she frowned, studying my puzzled face. “I’ve been calling your name for a while and you didn’t reply. You look so... Withdrawn. Is everything alright?”
“Oh, somidah!” I gasped, noticing how classy she looked, I closed my eyes and a big smile beamed out of my lips. “There’s nothing to worry about dear, I’m fine.”
On her was a purple ruffled mini-gown and a black purse and wedge-heels. Her glowing black hair rolled down her round face, and she had a baby pink lipstick on to complement her outfit.
Somidah rolled her eyes up as she looked around. “It’s me, Somidah Mason, your blossom friend. It’s just the both of us in this office, and I know you well. What is wrong with you?”
“I’m serious, nothing is wrong.” I pointed out with all honesty.
“Are you sure? Because worry is written all over you face.”
“I’m double sure.” I assured her, scratching my nape." It’s just office work. Things are getting tough these days." I lied, just to cover up. Somidah watched as the lies ran through my lips and she played along.
