DENIAL flooded the three as Averman drove himself along with Sophie and Adam back to his house. Dean loved Sophie. He cared more about her than he did himself. So why would he leave out of nowhere? Why would he leave just when he had the opportunity to spend time with her practically whenever he wanted?
Averman looked at Sophie through the rearview mirror, frowning as he watched Adam comb through the girl's hair with his fingers. She was still crying just like when Adam ran up to her but now it was much softer, less body wracking sobs. Adam had his cheek pressed against the top of the girl's head, occasionally pressing a gentle kiss to it.
"Can you play some music please?" Sophie spoked for the first time since the three left Eden Hall. "It's too quiet."
Averman obliged, giving the girl the option between Nirvana, Kate Bush, and ABBA which happened to be the only three cassettes the red head had in his car at the moment. From her spot curled into Adam's side, Sophie let out a muttered "ABBA" and Averman handed the different cassettes back to Adam to give him the right one. Not soon enough for Sophie, the opening of "Super Trouper" began playing making her hum along.
Adam felt the feeling of her humming on his bicep and pressed yet another kiss to the top of her head. Averman sang along quietly making Sophie's lips twitch upward at the sound. Through the rearview mirror, Averman saw the small smile and smiled to himself. She would be okay. He would make sure of it.
The rest of the ride home was Averman singing along to the music while Sophie hummed along, Adam drumming the fingers from one hand on Sophie's arm. Once they arrived at the house, Averman let the pair into the kitchen where each of them grabbed several snacks before crowding onto the couch together. Sophie sat squished between the two boys while they watched reruns of some show that she couldn't remember the name of.
"Thank you," Sophie mumbled to the two as she rested her head on Averman's shoulder. "For hanging out with me even though I'm a mess right now and you could be out with the rest of the team."
"I'd rather be with you and cheer you up then let you be sad on your own," Averman said as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "You're my best friend. It's what I'm here for."
"Me too," Adam smiled down at her. "You two are my best friends. I'd choose spending time with you two over just about anyone else."
"'Just about'?" Averman raised an eyebrow.
"Can I tell him?" Sophie asked with a small smile as she looked up at the blonde boy to her right.
Adam looked between the two for a few seconds before giving the girl a small yet firm nod.
"Adam has a crush," Sophie teased with a soft smile. "Ave, do you ever go to the record shop after work?"
"No way," Averman went wide eyed and his mouth opened in shock. "Garcia?"
Adam's eyebrows furrowed.
"Carter Garcia? You're the pretty boy he was talking about the other day?" Averman looked impressed. "You got Carter Garcia calling you pretty boy? Adam, he's hot!"
Sophie was laughing, a sound both boys enjoyed more now than ever before. Adam was bright red, almost matching Averman's hair. The blonde boy was covering his face with his hands causing Sophie to "aww" at him, pulling him into her arms.
