AMELIA CLAXTON
MAY 14TH, 2021Our car that is graciously supplied by Vogue (thanks Anna!), brings us to what I would think is an abandoned warehouse on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. There are two security guards standing by the door, each with a list in hand. Something I have never seen before at the few shows I have attended with Ruby.
My brows furrow at the confusion and when I look over to Ruby, she is wearing the most elated smile as she takes in what is seemingly a creepy, old warehouse to me.
"Ruby, what is going on?" I question because I know this is not just some new indie designers show that we normally would attend. The shows I have attended in the past have proudly displayed the designer or brands name in lights to celebrate their arrival to the New York fashion scene.
"Okay, I was keeping it a secret because I was worried you would back out if you knew this is bigger than the shows we usually attend," she pauses, biting her lip nervously. "This, my friend, is the unveiling of Gucci's new collaborative collection and with a little promotion, I get to cover it." She is giving me an anxious look, preparing for my reaction.
I pull her into a hug excitedly. "Gucci?! Also, how dare you think I would not be there to support you for something so big in your career! Rue, this is your big moment!" I smile widely at her. "This is why you've been so giddy lately! You got a promotion!"
She gives me a shy smile. "Well, still a junior editor but I now get to work on the bigger fashion houses' special collections. Hence, why we're here tonight. They have been super secretive about it and it isn't fully launching 'til the beginning of next year but they are unveiling it tonight exclusively. Vogue gets to be the first to report on it so it is kind of a big deal!" She wraps her arm into mine. "I even had to pull a few strings to get you in because of how exclusive it is."
I turn to her with a smile, giving her arm a squeeze. "I am glad it worked out because I am so so so proud of you, Rue."

At coat check, they take our phones to which Ruby explains is because of the exclusivity of the collection and that the risk of it being leaked before Gucci publicly releases can be catastrophic to the marketing of it.
Once we're inside, it is a completely different atmosphere than the outside of the building. The brick walls are painted an ivory color and the lighting of the room gives it a subtle glow. The runway is centered and diverts to each side of the room. Opposed to the chairs next to the runway, there are cocktail tables surrounding the room where guests are standing and sipping on drinks. Two bars are stationed in the back corners respectively.
At the start of the runway, the name 'Gucci HA HA HA' is displayed in bright colors.
"Okay Mia. I have to go speak to a few people. Do you think you'll be alright by yourself for a few? The show isn't supposed to start for another hour. So, go grab you a red wine. Find a guy to flirt with." She sends me a wink. I laugh and shoo her away, responding "I'll be fine. Go be the badass Vogue fashion editor you are for the night!"
