AMELIA CLAXTON
DECEMBER 24TH, 2021Christmas music softly plays through the apartment. Not Harry's apartment. Not my apartment. Our apartment. Well, soon to be our apartment.
The day after Harry asked me to move in, I went home to tell Ruby the news. Our lease was due to renew on December 31st and thankfully, there were no hard feelings from her about me moving out. Plus, Ruby had insinuated that she had been thinking of moving into somewhere closer to her office. Her hours have been longer in the last few weeks. It doesn't hurt that her and Lacy have become a lot more serious recently, either.
There were a few tears shed, though. I mean, we had been roommates for the last six or so years. Her only condition was that she would be granted access to my new place whenever she wanted to see her nephew. Of course, I obliged.
I decided I wouldn't officially move in until after New Years. Harry understood I wanted to spend the last little bit of time in my apartment. He knows how much that home has meant to me and he wanted me to be able to take it all in, one last time. I've still been packing up things here and there. Having him around to do that has been a big help, too.
Harry and I sit on the floor of our living room, coffee table between us. The bright twinkling lights on the Christmas tree is the only light in the room. A cheap tree that we had only bought three days ago; simply because I refused to have a Christmas without a tree. Harry had said he never committed to one because he was usually traveling somewhere on Christmas but he conceded the moment I asked for it. We're enjoying the somber Christmas-ey feeling in our home as we decorate a gingerbread house. We both have a mug full of freshly made hot chocolate to sip on.
We had made the decision to both stay in New York for the holiday. I unfortunately didn't have much of a choice since my parents decided to go on a cruise for Christmas and Adeline was spending the holiday with her boyfriend's family in Florida. Her first time meeting them was too special to pass up so I was okay being without my parents and sister for Christmas. It meant that I got to spend time with my new little family.
Harry ended up backing out of his trip home to England to see his family. His reasoning simply being that he didn't want me spending the holiday alone. He knew it would be stressful on me and the baby to take an international flight this far into the pregnancy, so me going with him to England was out of the picture. I had told him that I would spend time with Ruby before she went back to DC for the holiday, but he insisted that he would stay.
"I love you," I say out of nowhere.
Those three words have been said at least a thousand times in the last week and a half. After we finally confessed them to one another, it brought us pure joy just to say the words. Every morning starts with an 'I love you,' and ends with the same. Each kiss has those three words laced in them.
