AMELIA CLAXTON
JUNE 24TH, 2021I received a call from Ruby's coworker, Lacy, on Tuesday. A few of Ruby's colleagues want to throw a surprise dinner to celebrate the promotion and her being chosen to cover the Gucci collection. I have been tasked with getting Ruby to the restaurant and making sure it stays a surprise. Lacy also told me to invite anyone else who doesn't work with them that should be there.
The first person to come to mind is Harry.
I am torn between the thought of inviting him or not. Is it selfish of me to want him there? Does it take away from Ruby's accomplishment? Yet, I remind myself that he is the reason she got the promotion at all. He wanted someone who was young and not one of the 'big guys' to cover his collection. She was over the moon because of him.
Ultimately, I come to the decision to ask his thoughts. To see if he thinks it's overstepping for him to go. Plus, it's important to see if he would even be comfortable going. It would be a public place with people who don't know about us. Is he ready to take that step?
We are supposed to meet for lunch in an hour and I decide to ask him then. He could say that it isn't my place to invite him to a celebration for Ruby. That's okay. He could say he isn't comfortable being seen in public with me. It would really hurt to hear that, but I would understand.
In the hour leading up to our lunch date, I am all over the place. I am stressing about asking him. There's so many different ways he could react to what I am asking and that has me feeling all over the place. I check my phone and realize he is supposed to be picking me up in fifteen minutes.
"Shit!" I mumble to myself.
I run to my closet and throw on the first outfit I pull out. An oversized white button up matched with a pair of ivory shorts. I don't have time to do anything special with my hair so I put my hair in a messy bun and add a Yankees ball cap. I check myself in the mirror and it's good enough for a quick lunch date. Cute but simple. I sort of look like a tourist and I find the scene a bit humorous.
