↳ too late

evi had decided to finally change into her sisters clothes, so she walked back into the office, the little note in her fist, she was scared to let go of it, fearing it would vanish into thin air

she pulled up the dress to her face and smelled it. she couldn't recognise the washing powder scent, but there was a hint of wandas scent, the perfume that she always wore

evi closed her eyes, imagining she was hugging her sister

she looked at herself in the mirror after she had put on the clothes, patting down the necklace around her neck as well

"wow" said tony when he entered the room "you look like an exact copy of her"

"i guess" evi laughed "but she has green eyes and our hair's different"

"can't argue with the eye part, but wandas hair is red now"

"it is?" evi asked surprised, turning around

"steve said she told him she did it because of you. i think she dyed it a few weeks after sokovia"

evi smiled sadly, thinking about her big sister, lonely in a foreign country, without anyone she knew, without her family

"i miss her and i wish i could at least tell her i'm fine"

"i know, kid" tony patted her shoulder

"she was with us, these past years and now she's with vision. she's happy i think"

a tear slipped down her cheek. of course she was glad that wanda was happy, but it hurt to know that she wasn't a part of that reality and that her sisters happiness was bound to end soon.

she wiped away her tears and looked up at the man next to her. "how long do you think it is now?"

"i would estimate that it's at least a few more hours"

evi nodded and folded her dirty clothes, so she had something to occupy her, pietros note tucked away into her jacket pocket, where she could later take it out and look at it.

"i think it's night" tony suddenly said "it wouldn't hurt if we all caught some sleep, especially you, you look like you've been through it" he joked, but added with a more serious tone

"you should really go back to sleep, you only slept about fifteen minutes and your head must still hurt. remember, that you can't fight like that"

"sure" evi sighed "i call dibs on the couch"

she walked back into the room with the couch. sitting down and taking the ring on her necklace into her hand

"i know that you told me not to come back, but you know that i was never one to follow rules, brother dearest"

she got comfortable and closed her eyes, thinking about her brother and praying that he would wait for her in the mirror dimension. she just had to talk to him, maybe she could still save him

"pietro?" she called, her voice bouncing off the mirrored walls

"evina!" pietro scolded, when he walked out of the shadows "i told you to not come back"

"i had to" evi mumbled, tears pricking in her eyes "i couldn't leave you, not again"

"you never did, you're not responsible for my decisions, you know?"

"i felt like i were and at the same time i'm really angry at you. why couldn't you run away like always?"

"i couldn't" he breathed looking down "i had to stop running at some point, i figured it was just a question of when, i'm not as powerful as you and wanda are and i'm definitely not as persistent" he laughed "you came back from the dead evi, and you're still not leaving this behind you"

"that's not true, piet" evi cried "you didn't have to die"

pietro just shrugged his shoulders.

"i miss you so much" the sob broke out of her suddenly

"come 'ere" he muttered, pulling her into his arms, stroking her hair. and for the first time in a while, she didn't have to close her eyes and pretend it was him, this time it really was

"you'll get used to it. it'll get better, i promise you"

"i will never not miss you"

"i'm not expecting that of you, but you have to let me go, evi, it's dangerous"

"it's not too late, pietro. you said that i made it out of here, so you can do too"

he looked down silently, while he shook his head

"i can't leave, evi"

"but you're in the mirror dimension, it's between life and death, you said that yourself!"

"i'm not"

"what do you mean?" evi whispered, the realisation slowly setting in

"i don't belong here anymore, it's too late for me to come back, i went over there a long time ago" he mumbled

"over there.." evi muttered

"yes" pietro nodded and put his hand against her cheek "i'm just here because of you, i came because you called me"

"how is that possible? i didn't even knew all of this, how could i call you?"

"the ring" he said, pointing down at the necklace she was wearing "it's your connection to me"

evi nodded, touching the ring

"but calling me, staying here, that all comes with a prize. i don't know what it is, but i'm certain that you could strand here once again"

"i don't care, pietro" evi assured "the world is basically going to shit and wanda is gone too"

"what do you mean she is gone too?"

"it's complicated i was in the future and then back in the past and-"

"evi? hello evi?" pietro looked around searching

"pietro?"

before she could catch another look at her brothers figure, the mirror dimension had dissolved into thin air, leaving her alone in darkness.

it wasn't until long after that she woke up. happier than she had been in a long time. she felt heartbroken that pietro could never come back, but maybe she could return to him when everything went to shit. then she could be with him and wanda, wherever that would be.
