"Chrissy" Eddie called, stopping just short of where she was standing with some of the other graduates, all of them wearing matching gowns and caps but Eddie's eyes had found her immediately.
The smile on her face grew impossibly larger once she noticed the long haired body, standing awkwardly amongst the crowd of graduates and their families. She was quick to excuse herself, practically running over to Eddie, the black gown billowing around her as she moved as one hand held the black cap on her head so as not to lose it in her haste to get to him and in the other the diploma that had been given to during the ceremony. The one thing she had to show for the past few years of hard work, multiple bouts of self doubts that she wouldn't be able to complete this and countless days spent away from home, away from Eddie.
"You came" her voice was soft as always but there was a slight hint of surprise in her tone. Sure she'd invited him but she wasn't sure he'd come and she'd travelled with her parents, staying over the night before so this was the first she'd seen him.
"Of course, there was no way I was missing something this important" he replied without hesitation, "and I know you probably have plans for a big celebration but I was wondering if I could maybe steal you for a little road trip?" He asked, nervousness creeping into his voice as he spoke. He had big plans for the trip and the possibility of her saying no could derail the whole thing.
"I've promised to go to dinner with mom and dad…" she frowned, bottom lip jutting out in a small pout. As much as she'd missed Eddie and would willingly leave with him right now, this was something she'd promised her parents since she received the graduation date so she couldn't pull out hours before.
Eddie seemed to sense her struggling and even though he was disheartened by her words despite it not being an outright refusal, he still plastered on his carefree smile pretending that it didn't matter too much. "Nah it's okay, it can wait for another day" he smiled, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans to stop them fidgeting and giving away his facade.
The crease of a frown didn't leave Chrissy's face as she took in his words, she could tell something was up no matter how hard he tried to hide it from her. Dinner shouldn't take that long and they'd still have the rest of the night to themselves, she thought, an idea forming in her mind. "Come to dinner with us and then I'm all yours" she tried, heart swelling at the way Eddie's eyes lit up at her words.
"Are you sure your parents wouldn't mind?" He asked suddenly, feeling a little self conscious. While he had met Chrissy's parents before, it had taken them a while for them to come around to the idea of their daughter dating the town freak and though recently they had started treating him as part of the family he didn't want to overstep on their family dinner.
"Of course not, this is my celebration and I want you to be there Eddie" she smiled softly as she slowly brought a hand up to cup his cheek, adoring the way his eyes fluttered shut as leaned into her touch. Clearly he had missed her just as much as she’d missed him if his reaction was anything to go by and she made a mental note to have him as close as possible for the foreseeable future, starting with dinner.
"You know I'm not really dressed for dinner" he chuckles, turning his head to press his lips to the palm of her hand before pulling away and leaving her wanting to feel his lips against hers instead of just on her palm. Reminding herself there would be plenty of time to smother him in kisses later she pressed on, not planning on leaving here without him.
"I don't mind, I've missed you too much to not be with you tonight" she adds, looking up at him through her lashes in a way she knows he can't refuse. Smiling brightly when he gives in, she pulls him through the crowd in search of her parents.
Dinner goes just about as well as Eddie expects it to. It’s awkward to say the least, he’s not used to fancy restaurants and the looks he’s getting from other diners remind him of those he received back in high school but the way Chrissy is unashamedly holding his hand and the way her blue eyes sparkle in the lights of the restaurant as she looks over at him, he couldn’t care less as long as she doesn’t stop looking at him like that. Her parents on the other hand seem more affected by the stares and to Eddie it feels like they are doing all they can to speed up the dinner but that may just be him projecting his own wishes onto them, he thinks as he reaches into his jacket pocket for what could possibly be the hundredth time just to check his present for Chrissy is still there.
