After three months, I was given the okay to return to my normal activities. Spencer was hesitant at first, and then he handed me the keys to my car.
The first thing I did was go to the store, and then I went to the mall, and then I went into work.
The employees shower me in hugs.
"How are you doing?" Katie, the manager asks me.
"I'm good." I say. "Much better. Spencer didn't run this place to the ground, did he?"
"No, but he did fire Megan and Tyler." Katie says.
I frown. "What?"
"Yeah. He fired them because they were making out in the back."
I frown. "What'd they say?"
"They said you were okay with it as long as they were on break. Spencer said it was bullshit. We all told him it wasn't."
"It's not bullshit." I say. "What the hell. I'm calling him."
I dial Spencer.
He picks up on the second ring.
"Are you okay?"
"Fine. Where are you?" I ask.
"At home."
"Yours or mine?"
"Yours." He says. "Why, what's up?"
"I just...can you come to my work?"
"Okay. I'll be there in ten. I love you."
"I love you too."
I hang up.
I help customers until Spencer comes.
He walks in with his hands in his pockets.
It's June now. He's wearing a blue muscle shirt and shorts.
Fuck, he looks hot.
I take a deep breath.
I wave him over to me, and then walk into my office.
He follows me and shuts the door.
"And I in trouble?" he asks.
I sit down on my desk.
"Why didn't' you tell me you fired Megan and Tyler?"
"So that's a yes." He sighs. "You were very ill. I didn't want you to worry."
"But you fired them for nothing."
"No, they were about to have sex."
"So?" I ask.
He blinks four times.
"You're okay with that?" he asks.
"I don't want to be a hypocrite, Spencer." I say.
"How would you be a hypocrite?" he asks.
"We've had sex in every place in this damn restaurant."
"Okay, but they're employees."
"So?"
"Natalie." Spencer pinches the bridge of his nose. "I know this is your job, but I'm looking out for you. Imagine if a health inspector decided to walk in at that exact moment. You would have lost the place because you don't want to be a hypocrite."
I sigh. "Maybe you're right."
"Ae you mad at me?"
"No." I say. "I just wish you would've told me so I wasn't walking in here blind."
