I'm lying on the floor of my house on the cold tile singing. My house is fully packed and we leave tomorrow.
The front door shuts.
"Natalie?" Spencer asks.
I move my arm to meet his eyes.
We had to wait three months for us to get the key. Now I'm six months pregnant. I don't know the sex. I don't want to know until my next appointment.
"Hmm?" I mumble.
"I don't think I can do this." He says.
I struggle, but sit up.
"Do what?" I ask.
"Do this. Us."
I stare at him, my heart cracking.
Tears instantly start falling.
"Natalie." I see nothing but pain I his eyes.
"I mean, my brother is marrying your sister."
"So?" I sniffle. "It's not like you're marrying your sister." I say. "There's a big fucking difference, Spencer."
"I know." He says. "I just feel weird."
"Is that why you've been so distant?"
"Yes." He says.
I nod slowly.
"Will this make you happy?" I ask.
"No." he says.
I sigh.
"Well I'm getting the house. Since you're so keen on leaving because you feel weird, go ahead. There's the door."
"Don't be like that." He whispers.
"How do you expect me to the, Spencer." I say. "Happy?"
"No." he says. "I'm gonna go. You can keep the ring because I'm still in love with you."
He walks out without another word.
I laugh until I cry, and then I get in my car and drive to Caitlyn's.
"Hey sis. What's wrong?"
Jeremy is my brother in law. He's Caitlyn's husband.
Spencer's brother and my brother in law just share the same name.
"Spencer left." I grumble.
She sits me at the kitchen table with her and Jeremy.
"Why?" she asks.
"He said it was awkward that his brother is marrying our sister. He said it feels weird. He said this won't make him happy. He told me to keep the ring because he's still in love with me, too."
Caitlyn stares at me. "Mrs. Key won't stand for this. I'm calling her."
"Caitlyn." I say.
She ignores me and grabs her phone.
I hear her talking out back.
She comes back.
"Mrs. Key is on it." She says.
I sigh.
An hour and a half later, Mrs. Key walks in the house.
"Natalie, I'm sorry my son is an idiot." She says. "I spoke to him. He doesn't even know what he's feeling. I helped him realize that he's not uncomfortable with your relationship with him; he's uncomfortable with Jeremy and Emily's relationship.
