Quickly & Quietly

Aurora

My alarm blares and I quickly sit up and turn it off before it wakes my parents, I push my blonde hair out of face and let out a quiet sigh. I get up quietly and unlock my door, opening it slowly making sure it doesn't squeak

I walk to the door across from my room and quietly close it, I let out a sigh of relief and turn to the bathroom mirror and cringe at how messy I look, I need to get a hold of myself this is getting embarrassing, I let out a sigh and continue my morning routine

I grab my toothbrush and quickly wet it and put toothpaste, I brush my teeth, then my hair and wipe the old mascara off my lashes only to put some more on.

Mid brush stroke I hear glass break followed by yelling downstairs and I still my movements, I let out a slow breath in preparation and run to my room, I shut and lock the door and put on the uniform the Diner provides the employees which is a white pleaded skirt with a white button up and a cute little pink apron to top it off, I grab the tote bag I found at goodwill a few months ago that quickly became my favorite, and throw in the house keys and chapstick along with a few hair ties, I grab my name tag quickly when I hear footsteps going up the stairs "AURORA!" my dad yells, I open my window and look down, God I don't want to do this again, I take in a deep breath.

My door knob jingles followed by pounding on my door "AURORA OPEN THIS GODDAMN DOOR!" I jump down and land on my side, a pain shoots up my arm and I wince but ignore it getting up jogging away from the window and out of sight.

I let out a breath of relief once I see the big glowing Diner sign, I walk up to the door and pull it open, Glenda the very nice lady who owns this diner looks up and smiles sweetly "Good morning sweetheart" she says moving to hug me "Good morning Glenda" I say a smile on my face, she looks at me up and down "are you sure you don't want to take a later shift or even a day off? You work all the time honey" she says concern lacing her voice, I giggle and shake my head "no no Glenda I'm all good here" I say adjusting my bag on my shoulder.

I walk towards the employees only room, and open up the little locker she assigned me and put my bag in, adjusting the skirt the girls have to wear and putting on my pink apron, I grab the notepad I write orders in and close the locker walking out and towards the cash register to wait for customers.

...

It is currently 9pm and I am exhausted, my shift ends around 10pm so I still have another hour until I get to go 'home', the bell chimes above the door and I look up from the computer and a guy who is pretty tall walks in and thats coming from me, Im 5'8 taller than most girls unfortunately, he has dark brown hair and both of his ears pierced with dark silver hoops on both holes,  he looks at me briefly and moves to go sit towards the back.

"Hi! Sit wherever I will be with you in a sec" I say grabbing my notepad and a menu, he stares at me for a second longer than needed making me nervous but I walk towards the table he sat in anyways

"Hi, here is your menu" I place down the menu in front of him, and then grab my pen and paper "do you know what you want to drink?" I ask with a small smile on my face, he looks up and I am momentarily blown away by his looks but that didn't last long before he spoke breaking me out of my daze

"I just want a milkshake" he says quietly, "mhm, okay is that all?" I say writing it down, He nods and hands the menu back to me his hand lightly brushing mine and I grab it and walk away on shakey legs, Jesus that man is fine

"Milkshake is up!" Our cook Ares says placing it on the table in the kitchen "thanks Ares" I say picking it up "you're welcome sweetheart" he responds with a smile, I walk over to the piece of meat of a customer and place his order on the table "here ya go" I say finally able to place it down, I was so scared I was gonna drop it, he nods and I smile softly and walk away, I look up at the clock Glenda has placed above the door to go into the employee's only room and sigh.

9:45pm I really don't want to go to the house, he's just gonna do what he always does.

With a final wipe to the table I look up at the clock 10:30pm, the guy is still in here, he only ordered another milkshake, "Aurora honey, its 30 minutes past your shift" Glenda say putting her hand on her hip "I knowww, you know how it is Glenda I'm not ready to go home" I say letting out a small laugh, "go home and get some sleep child" She says giving me a smile and walking away, who knows if my dad will let me sleep tonight

I walk to the lockers and take off my apron, its dark out and a little chilly, frick, I left my jacket, I was in such a rush I forgot it, its fine nothing will happen its a short walk anyways, I grab my bag and say goodbye to Glenda and Ares, I look into the diner and see that our little mystery guy is gone, I walk out the doors and take a left down the road to my wonderful house.
