Liam

After I got home from school, mom was already in her room. I went straight there, eager to know about her prospects and how the day was. Our rooms are adjacent at the guest wing and I love that, it feels less weird now that we're not living in a house of our own anymore.

Not that I want to leave it here. Hell no! I love not having to cook - it's never been my forte, to be honest - and I'm sure neither does she. Plus, video games.

I asked how her interviews had gone and she told me they went fine, though some of her potential employers asked her why she didn't go to college.

Huh, I'm sensing a theme here. But one way or another, she'd hear from them in a couple of days. So, now we wait.

I do hope she gets something. Even though we're refugees, there's no such thing as free meals. And the bill will come eventually. I'm old enough to know that by now.

It's fine. We're not a charity case. We can pull our own weight, as long as we're given the opportunity to do so.

I continue talking to my mom inside her room when we hear a knock at the door. I went to see who it was immediately, while mom changed in the bathroom. All rooms are suites, which is nice. Honestly, I thought I'd have to share a bathroom with strangers, so I'm actually very relieved.

"Good afternoon, Liam. I hope everything went well at your new school today." - Beta Gutierrez smiled politely at me as he said that.

"Hi, Beta. Yes, it went fine. How nice of you to ask." - I replied, enthusiastically.

"Good. The Alpha wants to speak to you at his office. And your mom too." - He dropped the bomb, calmly.

I'm gagged. I didn't think he'd want to see us this soon.

"Of course, Beta. My mom and I will come downstairs shortly." - I replied, smiling nervously.

"Perfect. Have a good afternoon." - He said and walked away.

Mom got out of the bathroom and stared at me with a frightened gaze.

"What do you think he wants with us?" - I asked her, a bit scared.

She looked pale, a blank expression on her face. But I can smell her fear, even when she refused to show it on her face.

"I don't know, but we better not keep the Alpha waiting for us." - She said and motions me to leave the room.

We get downstairs, turned a corridor and went to the Alpha's office. The door was open and he's waiting for us alone.

He is sat behind his desk. A nice comfortable office with very little extravagance. There're chairs ready for us to seat. He stood up and closed the door behind us.

"Good afternoon, William. Mrs. Forsythe." - He greeted us with a polite tone. We bowed our heads, of course, and greeted him back.

"I called you here today just so I can officially welcome you both to our pack and have an open and honest conversation about what you can expect from us here." - He started in a somber tone. My mom and I nodded along.

"First of all, I'm gonna be honest with you, this was not an easy sell for me. Not at all. At first, I was fine with it. You know, I heard your case and thought it was appalling that you even got beaten in the first place for something that wasn't your fault." - He explained, looking very serious and stern.

"But when I heard my Beta say your last name, William, I won't lie. I said no." - He looked me deep in the eyes as he said that. I gulped at the intimidating gaze. Mom is quietly listening in, but clearly as uncomfortable as I am.
