Chapter 17

I was in a state of great shock...
My beloved grandmama was gone. One of the only sensible constants in my life. I admired her alot.
After the herald left, Serena quickly rushed to my aid and i went to my room. As it was customary, the hall stood up as i stood up in preparation for me to leave for my bedchamber. The faces of those in the hall today brought upon a sour taste to my mind. Finnie's expression was what felt like a gut wrenching pain. We were both close to our grandmother.  My mother was taken aback and looked like she had just seen a ghost..It was plastered with total saddness.. Everyone deserved an early night tonight. As i got to my room, Serena helped me change into my night wear. She comforted me a little with some kisses here and there. I found it really sweet.
She brought Aura to me who was now clean and smelling really good. Serena put her on the bed beside me and went to light my candles.
Allegra had tasked Serena in making sure that i received a goodnight's rest every night and she was undoubtedly at the top of her game. She helped me relieve stress....alot.....
She opened my windows as the weather had just started getting warmer.... She came to sit by me as Aura also nestled on my lap.
"Your majesty, I'm sorry for your loss. And just know that I'm always here for you..."
I gently nodded, looking at here with tears in my eyes. She gently kissed me a bit longer, stood from the bed, curtsied and left.
By this time, James was done getting ready for bed with the help of his esquire.
He came into the room. He laid beside me, with both of us facing each other and gave me a very endearing kiss.
"We all miss her..."
Just because i was short for words, the only thing i could say was "Yes.."
He knew i had alot to say on mind but now wasn't the right time...
Aura had already drifted into sleep in both our arms.. In the middle of the night, i felt a sharp pain. A contraction. I had been feeling these pains for quite some time now but i thought nothing of it.
But then another one followed and hit again, like it was a big water wave crashing into the rocks ashore.
James rushed to me, aura was whining already so her noise startled the guards posted by our door.
"Your Majesty is everything okay?" They asked
James yelled
"Someone get that bloody midwife here right now! I think the baby is coming!"
A rider was sent immediately to retrieve Allegra. Already, i felt like a war was going on inside me as this baby was trying its best to come out into the world. Helena was beside me as promised. I was in great pain. James and Helena were telling me to take deep breaths which i did.
"You're making real progress your Majesty!"
Allegra ran into the room and got ready for the birth.
My heart pounded. The room was hot and i was annoyed. The only people in the room were: James , my mother, Helena and of course Aura who tried her absolute best to make sure i was comfortable..
Well into the new day, the contractions became more intense. I'm sure the whole castle was on stand still.
"GET THIS BABY OUT OF ME!!!!!!AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
My mother continued to pray by my side while Helena held onto my hand.
Me birthing on my back wasn't working.
"Your majesty, you have to push!" Allegra screamed.
"I CANT PUSH LIKE THIS!!!!" I screamed. My throat hurt..
I decided to do what real barrington women do. Have this baby on all fours. It was sort of an unspoken tradition that has helped the women in my family tremendously. Letting gravity help you with childbirth is a perfect plus.
I slowly went on all fours, while being supported by pillows. Allegra and the other midwives positioned behind me to catch the baby.
I faintly said
"Dear God"..
As tradition demands, whenever an heir is born, everybody gathers in front of the castle where the queen's bedchamber balcony. When they''re all gathered and the heir has been born, The midwives emerge onto the balcony and present the heir to their people. the castle goes silent for a moment to let everyone hear the child's cries.
I could hear the crowd gathered outside. Waiting in anticipation.
James kissed my cheek.
"Show them what you're made of" said James with a proud smirk. Amidst the pain, i smiled back. I loved when he made me feel like the most powerful woman on earth.
"Okay! Let us proceed!" I yelled.
And i started pushing. I was fighting with the strength of a thousand suns to bring this baby out of me because God knows, this pain was unbearable.
I screamed, yelled and cursed....
Suddenly, Helena took a peak and screamed
"A head! I can see a head!"
I pushed even further and then it started to feel like i was on fire.
I pulled at the sheets and almost ripped the headboard to pieces. James looked worried and terrified of me.
I screamed and screamed until i felt the head come out.
Helena started screaming and crying.
Mother was crying in the corner.....
And then i had to keep pushing till the baby was all the way out and then i fell slightly. Some of the midwives came to attend to me and the rest went to attend to the baby.
Allegra looked at James and smiled.
"What is it?"
"It is a boy ,my prince"
I smiled as my mother kissed me on the forehead and said "well done my darling girl!". A wave of relief washed all over me. The castle went silent and the trumpets sounded as the midwives came onto the balcony with the new prince.
James went out with them. The baby's cries caused the crowd to cheer so loudly. and i could hear James begin a speech.
"Today, i am happy to announce that her majesty the queen and myself have welcomed a beautiful baby boy!"
The crowd cheered and threw flowers.
He continued
"The prince's naming and christening shall be in one month time as tradition demands. God save the prince and long live the queen!"
And the crowd responded "GOD SAVE THE PRINCE AND LONG LIVE THE QUEEN"
Allegra handed the baby over to him and came to give the prince to me.
He was still crying. Music to my ears
I could see a tear escape from James' face as he sat beside us.
Helena smiled and came closer to the baby.
She curtsied to the Prince saying "your highness". And then she kissed my cheek.
"You were very amazing. I shall go inform Finniegan. He's just come back from an official duty"
"He will rush here like a lightning bolt into this room" james said as he laughed.
Helena giggled and left with everyone so i could be alone with the most important men in my life.
"Cry louder! And let the heavens hear you my dear noble prince!!" He said. I chuckled and started feeding him.
He looked at me in amazement. I felt embarrassed..
"Dont look at me like that James....i'm sweaty and filthy.."
He scoffed and replied "utter nonsense my love. Today, you were like a goddess...bringing new life into the world. Regina, that was when you were the most beautiful....."
I cried and kissed him..
"What shall we name him?" I asked.
James looked at me and smiled. Like he already had a name from the very day he found out i was pregnant.
"He shall be called Prince Chadwick the second"
Ah yes. He named our child after his Father. Chadwick the first, former duke of Gwaidth.
