prologue.

He didn't know how it had happened. It was a simple mistake that had gone wrong. Colby Brock had lost his best friend. Sam Golbach had disappeared deep in the forest of Bell Witch Cave.

It all had happened so fast. The three were inside the cave, and a noise echoed throughout the cave they were in. Sam went outside to check what had happened but never came back.

"Do you know when Sam's coming back?" Kat asked. It had been fifteen minutes since the two had seen him. Fifteen minutes was too long for someone to check outside for a simple noise.

"I'm sure he'll be back in a minute. Maybe the owner is back; forgot to tell us something." Colby said, shrugging it off; he knew Sam would come back eventually; he always did.

He wouldn't just run off or leave them there; he wasn't that dumb. Kat was worried over nothing. Sam would return soon, and they would continue with their video. It was hell week, after all.

"Colby, I'm pretty sure it doesn't take fifteen minutes to go outside and talk to some guy," Kat said, worry now evident in her features. The girl had cared for her boyfriend since they started dating all those years ago.

They were a team, just like Colby and Sam were a team. They thrived working together, even when things got scary and now was terrifying.

"If he's not back in the next five minutes, I'll check. I promise." The brunette replied with a sympathetic smile. The boy walked closer to Kat.

"Ok,"

Five minutes never felt this long. Maybe it was because they were waiting for someone who would never return. Or perhaps it was because time was moving slowly.

That was the thing about time. It always seemed to move slowly when you wanted it to move fast. Suspense maybe? Slowing down the time because maybe it gave them more time to act, to think.

Colby didn't want those five minutes to go by; he wanted to see his best friend walk through the gap between the entrance and where he was in the cave. To see his smile just one last time.

"It's been five minutes, Colby," Kat whispered. The two had stopped filming, putting the camera up. Now wasn't the time to carry around a camera.

"I know." Colby sighed, making his way toward the entrance where Sam had supposedly been. It felt weird to think like that. He had just been here, and now he wasn't.

The two went outside and into the thick forest surrounding the cave. It was pitched dark outside, and there were only two small flashlights, the ones they had used in their investigations.

"Sam?" Colby called out, hoping for a response. Nothing, just the wind moving through the trees.

The brunette wanted to pretend he had heard Sam's voice and was still out there. But to no avail, Sam Golbach was missing, at least for now. He knew he wouldn't hear his voice call back out, telling him he was ok.

"Sam!" Kat called out, her voice cracking from how loud she was screaming. She sighed before walking deeper into the woods. It seemed like it went on for miles, never-ending. There had to be at least a little bit of an ending. They only had to hike for a few miles before getting to the cave.
