Ayato breathed in the air around him. The night was already dark. The fog, made thicker by its proximity to the ocean, blurred every detail with its ragged veils. It was punctured at various distances by the reddish glow of lanterns and bars of light escaping from illuminated windows. The grass was soaked with rain and glittered under the stars, like a lake reflecting strings of lights.
A bitter wind, heavy with icy particles, whipped at his face, its howling forming the high notes of a symphony whose bass was played by swollen waves crashing into the piers of the bridges of Inazuma. He felt his heart racing.
Then he heard a sinister laugh from in front of him.
And suddenly, the figure stopped moving, turning around to face Ayato who, too, had stopped moving. Ayato heightened his senses since the fog made it difficult to see.
"Haha... Ha... you're so persistent."
Ayato gave no response to the man before him.
"Hm... I suppose I did just destroy your estate, but Archons... you have the stamina of a beast," the man tried to regulate his breathing whilst letting out a chuckle at his own words, "Is that why [Y/N] likes you so much?"
Ayato scowled, "What kind of sordid nonsense are you spouting?"
Asahi smiled broadly, "I'm rarely wrong, Commissioner. Are you absolutely certain she isn't playing you?"
Ayato breathed out, pointing his sword at the man before him, "Hold your tongue."
Asahi smirked, raising his hands in the air, "Kidding. Kidding. Kidding... Take a joke."
The commissioner's grip tightened, "You're awfully chipper for someone who is about to die."
"About to die? Who? Me?"
Once more Asahi laughed, feigning contemplating, "I wouldn't be so sure... Hm, well... I guess I can see why you'd be so mad. It is very sad that half of the estate crumbled, and people died, but shouldn't you be more focused on saving lives rather than chasing me down?"
Ayato glared, "Cease your tasteless jokes."
"Then again, I did it, so I am not too distraught. Good judgement, brother."
Brother? Had he no shame at all? This disgusting, pathetic excuse of a human being dared to call him brother? Every single word that came out of that scum's mouth sickened Ayato to no end. He could not comprehend how someone as repulsive as Asahi could be related to [Y/N]. All night, he had watched Asahi's every move, yet he could not find anything suspicious about him, other than his vile smile. So when he heard a loud explosion go off, and saw the look on both his wife's and the bastard's faces, he knew that Asahi was responsible for it. He so terribly wished to help in rescuing the people that attended the party but seeing Asahi flee the scene made him want to throw up. He had no choice but to follow him out of the estate.
Ayato could barely control his desire to get rid of the man before him, but he also knew that [Y/N] wouldn't be so happy with that, so he tried his best to calm down.
Asahi hummed, "Hm... you know, I thought a lot about it. There was no guarantee that the ground would sink right away even if I set off explosions under the estate's walls. However, there was an emergency escape passageway in the Kamisato estate, who could have known? And so I've been painstakingly creating cracks near the support beams. Then I set fire to the wall to create a series of explosions. Getting the timing to match was the toughest part though..."
