I sit in my rocking chair by the window, occasionally glancing at the television. Just then, I see a little boy on the screen who reminds me of the neighbor's son. Of course he isn't that young anymore, it's been years since I've seen them. I should stop by some time this week. He'd be an adult by now. I wonder if he's a scientist like he said he had wanted to be."I'll go tomorrow", I promise myself. The next day, I get out of bed, rubbing my eyes. I reach over and grab my glasses, putting them on. What was I going to....Oh yes! I was going to go visit that lovely family next door to see how've they've been.
After getting dressed, I walk out the door with a grin on my face. As I'm walking over to their lawn, I smell something. Probably their trash, I'll admit I haven't taken mine out in a while either. I walk up the few steps leading up to their house. It looks exactly the same as I remember it, painted a beautiful light blue color. The windows are lined with white.
I knock on the door, straightening myself up a little. After a minute, there's no answer. I begin to wonder if I hadn't knocked loud enough, or if they're not home. As I lift my fist to knock again, the door opens. I drop my hand and smile sweetly at the woman who stands in front of me.
"Hi, can I help you?" She asks me,
confused."Yes," I say with a chuckle. "I know this'll sound ridiculous but a while back like 15 or 16 years ago, I had come over a few times to say hello, and I remember your son who was around 7 at the time. I was wondering how y'all were doing."
She stares at me for a minute, confused. "You must be mistaken. 15 years ago, we didn't have a son. Do you mean our son Justin? He's 13." She says.
"No, I can't remember his name. Maybe it was...Jimmy? Or maybe Timmy?" I say.
She laughs nervously. Just then, who I'm guessing is Justin, appears behind her, looking at me.
"Hi there," I say, leaning down a little to his height. "Are you an only child?"
"Yeah, but I miss-" He started, but his mother grabbed him by the shoulders and pushed him back inside.
"We uh have to be going, we're actually about to take him to school." She tells me, apologetically.
"But mom, you said I didn't have to go today!" I hear Justin say, before she shushes him, shutting the door. Am I losing my mind?
