My phone buzzes. What sort of sick joke is this? Garrett can't be calling me. He died yesterday. In a car accident. Maybe it's just one of his family members...I guess I'll answer it.

"Hello?"

"Hey dude, we still hanging out today?"

I freeze.

"Dude?"

"I...Garrett?"

"Yeah?"

But it can't be...

"Uh...yeah...we can hang out today."

"Cool. Be over there soon."

Before I can say another word, he hangs up.  I let go of a breath I didn't know I was holding. What? I literally saw on the news that he died in a car accident...am I losing my mind?

I spend the next ten minutes thinking. I'm beginning to get a headache. I quickly pinch myself and then scoff. I'm obviously not dreaming.

The doorbell rings. I flinch and instantly look over. I can tell that it's Garrett through the screen door. I slowly get up and walk towards it, cautious. He shifts from foot to foot impatiently.

I open the door, my confused expression never fading. He walks in and I just...watch. In disbelief. He's right there.

I shut the door.

"Garrett?"

He sits down on the couch and turns to look at me.

"What were you doing yesterday?" I ask.

"I...just stayed home and played video games. Why?"

"So...you didn't get- uh...you didn't drive anywhere?"

"No. Is something wrong?"

I sigh and sit down in the chair across from him.

"You won't believe me."

He squints his eyes.

"I mean it. You'll call me crazy."

"Try me."

"Yesterday..I was watching the news and-"

He interrupts me.

"Wait, wait , wait- you were watching the news? Why? I thought only old people did that."

I glare at him.

"Just...listen okay? This is serious. I was watching the news...and they were talking about a car accident-"

He interrupts me again.

"Was it someone in your family? Or someone from school? Oh! I know...it was-"

"Garrett! Listen to me! It was you! You died in the accident. They put your picture up on the screen and everything."

Garrett smiles.

"You're either crazy...or messing with me."

"No, I'm not. Your mom was crying and talking about how it was her fault that she let you drive in bad weather- wait...is it raining today?"

"Hah...my mom did tell me that earlier. And yeah, it's raining. Just like it was yesterday."

"I know you don't believe any of this...but you could die today."

He laughs.

"You sound like you're threatening me, Jason."

I sigh and rub my face with my hands, exasperated.

"You could stay here until the weather clears up."

"Dude, it's  supposed to rain all week."

"It'll stop at some point before that...even if it's for like ten minutes..."

"You're freaking me out. Maybe I should just go."

Garrett starts to stand.

I get up and push him back down.

"Hey, what the hell, man?"

"You can't...unless...I drive you. I'll drive you home."

"You sound like my mom. I can drive myself, thanks."

He gets up and shoves me aside.

"Besides, if you drove me home, how would you get back here? An Uber? Be real."

"I could just ask someone to pick me up. Garrett...oh my god. There's a spider on the wall behind you."

His eyes widen and he turns to look at the wall. I grab his keys out of his pocket, rushing out the door. He yells and chases after me, but I'm already in the driver's seat.

He goes over to the window next to me and I roll it down.

"Get out. This isn't funny anymore." He pants.

"Get in. I'm driving you home."

After more protesting, he finally gives in with a groan, walking around to the other side and getting in.

He's still silent when we arrive at his house. We both get out of the car.

"Promise me you won't drive any more until the weather clears up. Listen to your mom."

"Yeah, yeah..." he says, annoyed as he walks through his door.

I called my brother and told him to come pick me up. He got mad at me because he was with a friend. But at least I'm home now.
I decide to eat something and clean up my room a little.

My phone buzzes. Garrett. I answer it immediately, unlike before.

"Hey-"

Garrett interrupts me, but I can't understand him due to the background noise. Yelling.

"I can't hear you. Are your parents fighting again?"

He doesn't respond, but instead, it sounds like he drops the phone.

"Garrett? Hello? Is everything-"

I'm interrupted by a woman yelling, her words clear. "Put it down!" followed by a scream from Garrett.

Before I could say something, a bang rings out through the phone. The sound was unmistakable. A gunshot.

Hours have passed, and the cops never called me back. They said they would do everything they could after I gave them the address.

I sit down and turn on the news. I stand up immediately. Garrett's picture flashes across the screen, along with a picture of a car crashed into a tree.

"Very, very tragic. Brian is with the boy's mother as I speak. Brian?"

"Thank you, Katherine. I'm here with Garrett's mother, Evelyn, who would like to say some words about her son."

Evelyn sobs.

"It's all m-my fault...I let him drive in this weather just this one- one time and he gets in a wr-wreck."

Garrett's dad appears, putting an arm around her. His face shows no emotion.
