Chapter Thirty-Two: Imposter
╚⊶⊶⊶⊶⊶✞⊷⊷⊷⊷⊷╝
NATHAN shifted around in his sleep, wincing at the pain in his side. He tossed and turned with the pain, hoping that it would fade away. Restless, he sat up, bringing a hand to rub over his face. He reached to the side, fumbling across the bedside table to find the lamp. Once he had pulled the small chain, the room filled with light, exposing the figure standing in the room.
A scream of surprise immediately passed over his lips. The figure, who had originally had its back turned, jumped and spun to face him. Nathan scrambled away from the bed, hitting the floor with a thud. He scooted back until he was flush against the opposite wall, his eyes wide.
The door swung open and a knife embedded into the hand of the figure, pinning it against the wall. The person cried out in pain and quickly looked in the direction the weapon was thrown. Nathan swallowed hard.
Aki stalked into the room, her thumb rubbing over the ring on her finger. Her narrowed gaze was trained on the figure, her lips pulling into a frown. She grabbed the man by his throat and shoved him against the wall, tearing the knife from his palm. He hissed with pain.
"Explain yourself, Rey," She growled. "This is the only chance I'm giving you."
"Marius told me he was coming after Nathan," He said, his voice a bit cut off by the pressure around his throat. Aki eased her grip, but not by much. "I came to make sure he was still here, and that you were here with him."
"He's not leaving my sight," She frowned. "How did you get her anyway? This entire building was anointed and I created a ward."
"The ward's broken," He replied, relaxing when she let go of his throat. "I'm not sure about the whole anointment thing, but the ward's been down for about an hour. I've already manipulated a few demons out of the place."
"Could Marius have broken the ward?" Nathan asked, using the edge of the bed to stand up.
"If it was broken an hour ago, no," Aki said, twirling the knife in her hand as she thought. "Demons can't touch the ward, neither can half-demons. It had to have been a human."
"A tenant by accident maybe?" Nathan said, his hand resting over the bandages. "You put it where they could have accidentally brushed it."
Aki gave him a quick glance. "Maybe. Either way, you better get out of here, Rey. I'm going to put another one up, and I'll do it in a place no one can mess with it."
The demon nodded and took a step back, disappearing into the shadows. When he was gone, Aki turned toward her brother. She walked to him, checking the bandages on his abdomen.
The sharp blade that was held against his throat took him a moment to register in his mind. His body went stiff, eyes going wide. Aki took steps forward, forcing him to walk backward until his back hit the wall. His gaze shook with fear as she added pressure onto the blade. She leaned forward, her lips inches from his ear. He felt her lips curl into a grin.
"You think I'm stupid?" She whispered. "Don't be so dense, Marius."
"A-Aki? W-W-What are you talking about?" Nathan managed, the knife bobbing as he swallowed the lump in his throat. "W-What are you doing?"
"Come on, cut the shit," She laughed. "How much of an idiot do you take me for? You already fucked your role up. Nathan doesn't know where I lay wards down, moron."
His body relaxed under her. She watched as his eyes turned a deep shade of crimson, lips pulling into a smirk.
"So, I underestimated you a bit," He chuckled, voice deep and heavy. "Apologies, Akeldama."
"Where's my brother?"
"He's content here with me," He hummed, head tilting to the side. "And I suggest if you want him alive when you get here, you release me now."
"Very funny, Marius," She replied. "But you're in my hands now. You think I'll let you go so easily?"
"Do you value the life and the sanity of your precious little brother?"
Her eyes narrowed, the grin on her lips dropping. She hesitated, but after a moment, she took a step back, moving the knife away from his throat. It shifted into a gun, and she held it aimed at his head as she backed away.
"If you've laid a finger on him, so help me God, you will understand the rage of a demon hunter," She spat, venom dripping from her words.
"Vicios," He chuckled. "Rest assured I haven't touched your brother. Yet."
"This isn't just a contract anymore," She spoke between grit teeth, her jaw set firmly. "This is a damned war."
"A war requires an army," He mused. "I have mine. The last time I checked, nepoata mea, there's only one of you."
"Building an army would only be unfair to you,"
"You're still so cocky. Just like Adrian," He snarked.
"Așa tată, așa fiică."
The bullet dug into the wall, the image of Marius having vanished. Aki lowered the weapon, the sound of the front door opening alarming her. She turned her head when she heard rushed steps.
Gojo appeared in the doorway, one hand on the frame and the other on the door. He looked around the room, spotting the hole in the wall before turning to look at Aki. Her grip tightened on the weapon, her teeth grinding together. She let her arm drop to her side and shoved past Gojo.
"Aki!" He called.
She ignored him, grabbing the hem of her shirt as she lifted it over her head, letting it fall to the ground. Gojo's eyes went wide as she rummaged around the bedroom, searching for her bag. She kicked her shorts off, leaving her only in her underwear.
"A-Aki!" Gojo yelled, his cheeks flushed with heat. "What the hell are you doing?"
"What does it look like?" She scoffed, fixing the spandex shorts before sliding her legs through a pair of cargo pants. "I'm getting dressed."
"For what? Why did you shoot the wall? And where is Nate—"
The situation dawned on him. His shoulders dropped, lips parting. He reached up and pulled his blindfold down.
"Marius has Nate."
"Bastard went and possessed someone to wipe the ward off the building so he could get in. He took Nate and Rey knew it. That's why he came," She said, tucking the long sleeve black shirt into her pants. She then pulled another shirt over that.
"Do you know where he is?" Gojo asked, watching as she sat on the edge of the bed, slipping her feet into a pair of black boots.
"Won't be hard to find him. I just need to find Nate." She grabbed a belt from her bag and slid it through the loops of her pants. "I need a car."
"Where do you need to go?"
"Church," She grabbed a jacket and threw it over her shoulders, sliding her arms through the sleeves. "I need holy water and all the advice I can get."
"The Catholic church on West?"
"Yeah."
"I got something better than a car," He grinned.
Her expression dropped. "No."
"It's faster."
"I hate it—"
"Too bad."
