Chapter Thirty-Four: Laughter In the Tomb

Warning: little gore

HER gaze flicked through the expanse of the trees. She watched the demons peer around the trunk, bright vermillion eyes watching her, then disappearing as she neared. Hushed whispers spiraled around her, dozens of voices overlapping one another. Snickers echoed in her ears, shadows whipping past in her peripheral vision. The sky was sealed by a thicket of leaves, leaving the forest in a dark cloud.

She could feel, sense, and even see all of the demons surrounding her. But none of them ever got too close. They kept their distance, only observing her as she trekked into the forest. The fall of the snow lightened up a bit, the howling of the wind quieting. When she reached the middle of the clearing, all of the demons were gathered around the edge, the hushed voices turning into screeching and sharp cries. She gripped the sword in her hand tighter.

"Do they make you nervous, Akeldama?"

The forest fell silent. She turned, her gaze falling onto the demon before her. Carmine-colored eyes glittered with hostility. They were wild and fearsome, striking a paralyzing feeling in her body. Pieces of flesh hung down from sharp yellow teeth, blood dripping down from his chin and pooling onto the ground. His callused, knotty fingers clicked and cracked as he flexed his hand, dark blood running down his arms from his sharp nails. Cauliflower ears sprouted from either side of his cocked head, puffy and raw from battle. His face was bestial, knicked, and notched from a blade.

His height was something unimaginable, and he towered over the tall woman. A foul smell filled the air, making Aki feel sick. She scrunched her nose up, disgust taking over her features. The demon's fingers twitched at its side, gaze set on her.

"Nervous? The only thing they make me is sick,"

His laugh was more like a bellow, echoing in the forest around them. "You've made a grave mistake coming here."

"From the looks of it," She tossed the blade over her shoulder, her opposite hand resting on her hip. "You were expecting me."

"I had a feeling you would be stupid enough," He said, the ground rumbling as he stepped forward. "You have much in common with your father, Akeldama."

"Then that's where you and I differ," Her lips pulled into a smug grin. "If my father and I have so much in common, then you know who's going to be the one walking away from this."

"Certainly you don't think you will be the one? If I recall, Adrian Dragavei is dead."

"If I recall, I blew your brains out two days ago."

She sprung to the side, ducking under the arm that he swung toward her. She rolled onto her feet, a grin still on her lips. She raised up, taking the sword from her shoulder. She placed the tip onto the ground and leaned against it, rolling her shoulders around.

"You're a fool, little girl."

"Coming from the one who decided to betray his entire bloodline and make a deal with a demon," She said, quirking a brow. "Think of a better insult, bastard."

"Akeldama Mihaela Dragavei," He stated. "You never liked your name. Why is that?"

"My mother chose it," She replied. "Do you know what it means?"

"Enlighten me," He mused.

"Both are Hebrew," She said, stepping in a circle around him, the blade in her hand turning in circles as she rolled her wrist.

"Akeldama means 'field of blood'."

Her lips twitched into a smirk, eyes darkening dangerously.

"Mihaela means 'one that is God'."

She disappeared, making his eyes widen. He whipped around, eyes narrowing. He heard a whistle and spun back around, his gaze finding her seated on the branch of a tree.

"Tonight will be your final night roaming Earth. Tonight, this field will become a river full of the blood of the unholy. Tonight, you will feel the wrath of God."

He blinked and she was gone. The anguished cries of the demons circled around them and flooded the air. He turned, watching the silver blade drag through each of their bodies. Some barely even had time to cry out before they were crumbling to the ground, smashed by the underside of the woman's boot as she moved to the next.

She grabbed the demon that rushed at her by the arm, flicking the blade back as it sliced through its neck. She flicked her wrist, the sword cutting through the rotting flesh like it was smooth butter. She threw it onto the ground, grabbing another by its throat. When its hand grabbed her wrist, it began to burn and sizzle on its skin, making it screech in pain. Still holding the first, she kicked another in the center of the chest, making it stumble back against another. She threw the first, making all of them scream from the holy water that doused their bodies.

"Enough of this!"

The voice boomed through the forest. Aki flicked her gaze to him, ripping the blade from a demon's eye. The blood splashed across her face, but she didn't react to it.

"Then stop acting like a coward," She deadpanned. "I can do this all day."

"You don't even understand this, Aki,"

The demon changed its form. She now stared at the image of her uncle. Marius ran a hand through his dark hair, bushing it back from his bearded face. He exhaled heavily, red eyes falling onto the woman.

She turned the blade, the blood flying off the silver surface, splattering onto the snow. "Tell me," She began to walk toward him. "What don't I understand? Why you are murdering innocent people? And don't even spout any bullshit about the Jujutsu Sorcerers. This isn't even about them anymore, and you know it. If it were, then why are you going after my brother?"

"They slaughtered your father. They murdered Alex. My brothers are dead because of the goddamned Jujutsu Sorcerers!" He yelled.

"Your brothers are dead because of you!" She yelled, her voice topping over his. "You did this! You! You were the one to kill them all! All of it was your fault!"

She stalked toward him, a dangerous look clouding over her bronze eyes. Her face twisted into a scowl, her free hand curling around the golden cross around her neck. Marius matched her glare.

"My family is dead and it's all your fault. You don't deserve any right to even speak of my father and my uncle. They died protecting. Fighting,"

"Your father was selfish—"

"Selfish?" She echoed, raising her eyebrows. "Selfish? The only selfish person is you. You are the one who fled from the sanctuary when they needed you the most. You are the one that summoned a demon and struck a deal with it."

"I did it for them! I did it—"

"You didn't do it for them," She shook her head. "Don't even attempt to lie to me. You did all of this for yourself. You're the one who's selfish."

"Ți-ai făcut mormântul aici, cățea."

She shot him a crooked grin.

"Știi, eu sunt ultimul vânător de demoni dintr-un motiv."
