Chapter Thirty-Seven: Stay Forever

"CAN I ask you something, Aki?"
Her fingers glided through the curly strands of brown. Nathan was laying on his back, his arms draped over his chest. She was seated on the side of his bed, her figure illuminated by the singular lamp in the room.
She hummed in response, her hand returning to her lap. She used to do this every time she would put him to bed when he was a child. He never had a set bedtime, only when he would start to get sluggish and rub his eyes, yawning, would she start to usher him to bed. Then, she'd sit beside his bed, running her fingers through his hair to soothe him to sleep. It worked now as it did then.
"Are we going to leave Japan?"
She dropped her head. She'd been dreading the question, but she knew it would come up. A deep sigh passed over her lips.
"You know the answer to that question," She replied.
Nathan sat up. "You have a relationship with Gojo," He blurted. "You can't leave that."
"We do not have a relationship," She said softly. "So I don't have a problem leaving it. He was a client. And now, that contract is over."
"You said the demon slayers weren't going to end with you," He said, his eyes flicking over her face. "That means you have to have kids."
"And you think I'd choose Gojo?" She quirked a brow. "A sorcerer?"
"He's not just a sorcerer and you know that," He frowned. "Gojo means something to you. You just don't want to admit it. You're scared to admit it."
"Scared?" She laughed. "Gojo is nothing to me, Nate."
"You're lying," He said. "I saw you kiss him, Aki. I see how you are around him. You trust him."
"I've kissed a lot of men, Nate," She admitted. "I've had my moments with men I've met around the world while on contracts. I left them with no issues. What makes you think that I won't leave now?"
"This is the first time I've seen you happy,"
She was visibly taken aback by the statement. Her eyebrows furrowed together, and her lips parted slightly. She sat back and Nathan sat up fully.
"There's a difference. You've raised me my whole life, Aki. You don't think I notice your behavior and attitude? Yeah, you act like you don't care, but I can see it. You and Gojo...you don't care that he's a sorcerer. If you did, you wouldn't have left me with him all the time. You trust him. You rely on him. You care about him,"
