Chapter Thirty-Five: Revenge

warning: blood, gore, angst, the works

HIS breath fanned out into the freezing air, white clouds surrounding him as he looked around. He swallowed hard, the lump in his throat making him forget about how raw his throat was from the cold. He took a deep breath before continuing through the snow. The flurry had picked up heavily, border lining a blizzard at the rate it was falling.

He brought his arms closer to himself, flicking his eyes around him. The hushed whispering sounded like it was right in his ear, making goosebumps arise over his arms. He ignored it, knowing that he wouldn't leave here alive if he listened to what it was whispering.

He knew it was dumb; following after Aki. He'd snuck away from Gojo while he was busy with Jujutsu business. He knew it was dumb. He didn't need anyone to tell him that. But he couldn't bear the thought of something truly horrifying happening to his sister. He felt sick just thinking about it.

He tensed up when he heard the growling in the distance. He felt the ground rumbling under him. He took off in a run, dodging the trees and piles of snow. His heart slammed against his chest. He grabbed the trunk of a tree, his gaze falling onto the clearing. He gasped.

Aki's side slammed against the ground. She tumbled back a few meters, but she was back on her feet, boots slipping through the snow. She flicked her hair back from her face, eyes narrowed with a deep hatred lingering behind them. Blood dripped down the side of her face, trickling from her nose and her busted lip. There was a gash along her forearm, the snow a dark red as she moved her arm away. She pushed herself up, rushing back towards the demon.

She slid between his parted legs, grabbing the discarded weapon from the ground. She spun around, the head of the demon behind her rolling onto the ground. She jumped up, using its shoulder as leverage as she jumped onto the shoulders of the larger demon. She dug the blade into the base of his neck, making him cry out in pain. Nathan winced at the screeching sound.

She jumped from his shoulder, grabbing the handle of the blade. She pulled him down onto his knees, swinging her body back around his shoulders. She ripped the blade from his body, holding it across his neck. She tucked it under her knees as she fumbled with the ring on her finger. Her hands were soaked with blood. She couldn't grasp the ring correctly.

Then, he saw it. The lashes across her back. Her shirt was completely shredded, and her skin was no better. There was so much blood pouring from the wounds that he was unable to tell how many there were for certain. Any normal person would have already passed out from blood loss, but she was moving as if there wasn't a wound there in the first place.
