Winifred the Wise: Stop harassing Cedric about his grades! The poor boy gets enough trouble from his schoolmates about it.

Goodwyn the Great: It's not harassment, my father used to ask me about my grades all the time. He gave me a good beating and wouldn't speak to me for days if I didn't do well on a test.

Winifred the Wise:

Goodwyn the Great: Don't look at me like that. It's fine. It builds character.

YEARS LATER:

Cedric: Father, you need to give me some space. If you and Mummy keep appearing out of nowhere like this I'm never going to get any work done.

Goodwyn: My father didn't give me any space. He hovered over my shoulder, criticising my every move, instilling a good, soul-crushing fear of failure and need for attention in me. And, when he did give leave me alone, it was for days at a time; he would lock himself in his room and not speak to me at all.

Cedric:

Winifred:

Goodwyn:

Goodwyn: Merlin's Mushrooms, I did not have a good childhood.

Winifred: What have I been telling you for the past forty years?

--------------------------------------------
L he just realized that he had an abusive childhood (don't worry, the realization that he was projecting his trauma on Cedric will come soon enough, in the dead of night) even though Winifred's been telling him this for like forty years.

Note: Goodwyn doesn't beat Cedric, he's just not the best parent. (But let's be real no one in that family was super great to Cedric ever.)
