The Day I Lost Them

I get a text that reads but three words, "Ginger is dead"

I see it, and cry my heart out.

A lovely trip that had just begun,

now ruined with the news that broke me.

I should have never left him, I should have never left him.

It's all my fault, it's all my fault.

When I look back on that day, I cry still.

Even writing this brings tears to my eyes.

It feels like I can't breathe, my vision blurs with tears.

I cannot possibly forget this, but it happens again.

I come home from school, happy to see her,

but I do not find her and I look everywhere.

Then I see the window open! The same one he escaped from.

The same one that he was killed from.

My heart wrenches as I run outside and call her name.

"Kahina! Kahina! Where are you?!"

I cry and run, then turn around and there she is.

On the ground, not moving, not breathing.

I have to stop, I cannot continue this, but I must.

I kneel down beside her and let out a scream.

I want to touch her, to stroke her fur, but I just can't.

I cry and I cry, and I want her back, I want him back, I want them back!

I run back inside and Mother hugs me, saying "Oh honey, I'm so sorry!"

I get her clothes wet with tears and snot coming out of my nose.

I don't want to live, I want to be with them, I want to die!

I want to die.

What is life worth living if you can't live it with the ones you love?

I'll tell what, it's not worth it at all.

I have to stop now, I cannot continue, not with this, not with life.

But what would they say when I see them again?

They would be sad that I gave up, while they stayed strong.
