Mina stood in the rain, her short dress doing little to keep her warm as the wind whipped around her bare legs. She wouldn't be in such a predicament had it not been for her lame (now ex) boyfriend who stood her up for the nth time. He got to their date two hours late with no excuse and that was the last straw, Mina dumped him without a second thought. Months of trying for absolutely nothing.
Which landed her alone, in the dark on a freezing February night waiting for a bus she wasn't even sure was going to be there. She could feel the cold seep into her bones and decided she'd have to just start walking home. "Stupid boyfriend. Stupid rain." She huffed and hugged herself, trying to keep warm. "Stupid cute ass dress." She shivered in the cold rain, her hair dripped as she walked.
On the same sidewalk, a slightly taller woman in a black suit was walking her own way to her car when she saw Mina. Her eyes widened and she immediately approached her, umbrella in hand. "Excuse me, miss? Are you alright?" Mina was startled by the voice. She looked up to see what she thought must have been the most beautiful person she'd ever seen.
"Oh, um, y-yeah." The woman didn't look convinced. "Are you sure?" Mina sighed and shook her head. "How about we stop at that café over there and talk about it over some warm tea?" Mina looked in the direction the woman was pointing and accepted the offer. The mystery woman shrugged off her large, fashionably oversized blazer and draped it over Mina's shoulders. Warm vanilla filled Mina's nose. "Thank you." The woman smiled kindly and held her umbrella over both of them as they crossed the street.
"You were shivering, it's the least I can do." The woman held open the door for Mina and shook out the umbrella before following her to a seat. "So, what's your name?" Mina had almost forgotten they were complete strangers. "Ah, right. My name is Mina." The woman smiled. "Beautiful name. Japanese, correct?" Mina smiled, a hum of affirmation slipping through her half-numb lips. "What about you?" The woman was about to answer, but a waiter arrived at their table.
"How may I help you this evening?" Mina pulled the blazer closer to her chest, suddenly aware of how see-through her dress was under the indoor lighting. "I'll just have some chai tea." He nodded and glanced her over once more before asking the same of the woman across from Mina. "I'll have the same." Her bunny-like smile was strained at best. "Alright, I'll get that to you right away." He winked at Mina before leaving.
Mina grimaced and the woman across from her almost laughed at the obvious distaste. "Gross. I'm so sick of men right now." The woman raised her brow at Mina's comment. "I get that. I can't say I have an easy time with men. Especially at work." Mina looked curious. "Where do you work? If that's okay to ask." The woman smiled. "I founded IM.CO." Mina's eyes widened. "You're Im Nayeon?" Nayeon looked bashful and ducked her head.
"I know I don't show my face much, but I didn't want to just be weird and not share my name." Mina was too busy marveling over Nayeon. Im Nayeon, one of the most successful business moguls in South Korea, sitting with her in a dingy coffee shop in the middle of the night. "Wow, I never thought I'd meet someone like you." Nayeon quirked her brow. "Someone like me?" Mina tried to explain. "You're one of the most successful people alive and you're sitting with me in this coffee shop. That doesn't just happen."
Nayeon shrugged. "You looked cold..." Her mumble was amusing to Mina who smiled at her sudden shy demeanor. "Well, the rumors are true at least." Nayeon sighed under her breath. "Why is everyone so desperate to know what I look like anyway? Can't they just assume I'm a hag or something and move on?" Mina laughed at Nayeon's lighthearted comment. "Because you're the most successful woman alive. People can't fathom that a woman would want privacy when it comes to their physical appearance."
Nayeon looked at Mina curiously. Just then, the waiter came back with their drinks. "Your drink, ma'am," he turned to Mina, "And yours, beautiful." Mina felt uncomfortable under his roaming stare. "Thank you." The finality in Nayeon's voice didn't reach him. "If you're free sometime, I'd love to take you out." Nayeon could see how uncomfortable Mina was. "Excuse me, that's my girlfriend you're talking to." The man looked at Nayeon and gulped, her angry stare running a chill down his spine.
