It was Friday afternoon, and I had just finished college for the day. Evan had texted me to say he was going to pick me up in 30 minutes to make the long drive over to Lake Michigan. I had my doubts about Evan's car being able to take us across state for the 5 hour journey, but he had assured me it would be okay. He took the liberty to finally fix his broken headlight, and took the car to the shop to get checked over. He told me he wanted to make sure I felt safe.
I made my way up to the dorm to see Dana sitting on her bed, packing an overnight bag to stay over at Elliot's. She turned to me with a smile as I went over to my small suitcase and checked everything over.
"It's so sweet that Evan is taking you to go away, Lex," she said as she hung her bag on her shoulder.
"I know, it was so unexpected. I know we'll have the best time," I made my way over to her and gave her a tight hug.
"Call me if you need anything okay?" Dana held my hands and gave them both a light squeeze. I gave her a smile in appreciation and nodded my head.
"Thanks Dana, I'll see you when I get back," I blew her a kiss as she left the room to walk down to her car. I let out a small sigh as I looked over my suitcase again. I had a pile of clothes from my drawers sitting in a pile on the end of the bed, mainly consisting of long sleeve shirts, tights and thermal singlets. I knew it was going to be cold, and I had to pack layers to keep me warm. I had on Evan's sweatshirt and a pair of sweatpants, so I would be comfortable for the long drive. I stuffed as much as I could in my suitcase and wheeled it to the door when I got a text from Evan saying he was downstairs, and if I needed help to bring my suitcase down. I knew I could do it myself, so I lugged it down the stairs and out to the street.
Evan jumped out of his car and rushed over to take the suitcase from my hands. He stopped in front of me for a moment, and leaned down to give me a kiss.
"Hey, you ready?" He asked, smiling at me from the boot of his Jeep as he packed my bag in. He only had a duffel bag, that looked to be embroidered with his name and a school logo. Maybe he played sports in high school?
"So ready," I replied, and sat on my side of the car. Evan got in the driver's seat and started the engine, beginning our 5 hour long journey.
"I hope you brought snacks," Evan put on his sunglasses and turned to face me with a small smile, his dimples on display.
"You bet I did," I replied, pulling out a bag of crisps, Reese's pieces and popcorn from the plastic grocery bag.
"Fuck yes popcorn," Evan grabbed the bag from my hand and I laughed and snatched it back jokingly.
"Eyes on the road, mister," I warned, opening the bag and grabbing a few pieces of popcorn. Evan opened his mouth and I placed the popcorn into it for him.
Evan reached over to his glove box and pulled out a packet of cigarettes, and put one into his mouth. He lit it quickly and his eyes turned back onto the road as he took his first draw.
"Any music requests, malady?" Evan handed me his phone to pick music through his Spotify. I laughed and thanked him, before playing a song I was enjoying at the moment. As we drove, we sung and I fed him more popcorn.
The drive was long, and tiring. Halfway there, we stopped at a gas station to refill Evan's tank. It was beginning to get dark outside, and the street lamps were turning on. I sat in my seat as Evan got out to fill up his car, paying before he did so. When he came out of the gas station, he was holding two cups of coffee. I smiled at him as he approached the car. He handed me the coffee through my window and I laid them both in the cup tray.
"We've made it halfway there, only another 2 and a bit hours to go," Evan informed me, leaning up against the car as he filled it with gas.
"I'm so glad, my back is starting to hurt," I laughed at my inability to sit for long periods of time without getting agitated.
