I open the door to see dark brown hair. I already know who it is so my mask drops as the door closes.
"Kav, you won't believe what just happened!" she jumps around at the sound of my voice with a strange look on her face until it brightens.
"Tell me!" she pats the spot next to her with haste.
"I met someone new," she nodded her head, "she's the daughter of some military hero named Lillian and she wants to be friends with me." I say as I point to myself. Kaveah just stares as I jump up. "She actually wants to be friends even with all the rumors and everything! She took me into the town and showed me so many treats and foods then she showed me her different collections in her room. Did you know people actually collect broken things? Did you?" I smile bigger than I have in a while but Kav's face wavers so mine falters.
"But are you sure? What if it's just fake." my face turns, "i mean it...has happened...befor-"
"But this time it's real. I know it is and I think you should be more happy for me." then her face turns, "I'm telling you because now I'll be spending more time with her and I know this will be different for us since we spend every second together. But I do want you to know that you are still my number one person, okay?" I say as I cup her face in my hands, while playing with her hair as she relaxes into my hand. She looks back up with an odd look in her eyes I often see but can't explain, then closes them again.
"Okay" she pauses and takes a breath, "Yeah, okay. Whatever makes you happy, just be careful, okay." She says as she puts a hand over mine.
"Don't worry so much, milks." she scrunches in disgust up her face at her old childhood nickname.
"I thought i said not to call me that anymore. I hate it." She doesn't move from my hands even if she's annoyed. I chuckle a bit.
"Why I think it's adorable, in my opinion." I walk to my vanity and sit down gesturing to liny to come to me. I look up to Kav and laugh at her grumpy expression. I start to undo linys hair on my lap so she can relax in her most comfortable form.
"I found out where the cousin lives. And a pretty good tarven." I look up at her through the mirror. "We can go there tomorrow but they live somewhere a little dirty but not enough; they don't have a source of income. But dirty enough I would not enjoy seeing you somewhere like that." she looks down at her hands at times taking a glance up for my reaction.
"You should know I have been in much dirtier places than what you're talking about." I say softly while staring at her fidgeting.
"Yes! Of course I know that but i...""You..?" I say while raising an eyebrow.
"I know you've been in more....unpleasant situations but this is in a different kingdom. What if they see you and then wonder- curiosity turns into questions and questions turn into finding out what's happening in the kingdom and we can't have that."
I sigh, "I know you're worried but I need to be there and if needed I'll pay them off. And if that doesn't work well, find out what will." I look at her with a gaze filled with as much kindness as how I remember how to give.
She huffs out a breath. "Yes, ok."
"And i will need you to send word to mother that we will be staying longer than i thought." I say as I play with Linys' hands-or I guess its paws. I guess she already changed into a different form. I feel her gaze behind me.
"What does that mean?"
"It means that the queen has selected me to watch over the new school she has created so I-we need to stay here for a while."
"...I don't know... I don't think it's a good-"
"But it is. She's going to be paying me and we're going to be getting new trading routes as well. We're going to need as much resources as we can get to replenish the funds we have lost and to find out who has been spending those funds." I say as I stand up with Lin in my arms.
"But what about the kingdom? They will need you to get those funds back."
"We can send letters and such for a reason, dear." I say as I walk to the window seat with lin.
"But-"
"You're worrying again." I fold myself into the window seat, finding a comfortable place.
"I know I am. But I just have a bad feeling."
"Like always."
"But this one is... i don't know... different somehow." I looked at her from my seat.
"They are adults. If there's a problem they will send word or deal with it themselves. You forget they actually ruled. I'm an unofficial ruler unlike them."
"Yea, sorry. Im...i don't know.""You're fine, Kav. I appreciate how much you worry." She smiles and nods as I say that.
"I'll go to my chambers and send word now." I nod my agreement. I start to get ready to sleep with the school and my home on my mind.
I sleep with liny in my arms. Using her snores as my lullaby.
