A/N: This took way too long to edit. Would have been up last night but sometimes editing just takes so much energy from me. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it :)))

"Nice waking up next to you sweetheart."

Nobara could feel her blood rush up immediately after that. Her face was red. If Maki did that shit in person, she has no idea what she'd do. She'd probably run away without looking out of sheer embarrassment. Close her eyes and just bolt. Maki's boldness was only because they were talking over the phone. Yeah, it must be. She'd never dare do this in person.

She knew Maki was being sarcastic, she knew that. Rationally, there was nothing for Nobara to feel these annoying feelings over. Even if she knew this, she couldn't just convince herself out of not feeling things. She'd just have to move past it. How exactly? She didn't know.

She gets ready in the morning with an unusually high amount of energy. Typically, she feels rather lethargic, not wanting to get ready to go to school at all. Sometimes she will debate the consequences of her not going versus the mental health points she loses every time she steps into that prison. She always ends up choosing to go since she doesn't want her own home to become a prison too. It's dreary enough as is.

She is halfway out the door when it hits her that she's actually excited to go to school. She's damn near rushing out the door to go.

Ok, it's not that she's excited to go to school. She's excited to see Maki.

She cannot let her know she's actually this damn excited to see her. It's embarrassing and a far cry from how she felt when she learned her name.

They have their first period together so she should use this time beforehand to dilute some of that excitement. She doesn't want to look like she's greeting the most gorgeous human being on the earth.

She walks forward with the intention of just thinking about anything except Maki. That doesn't work and she thinks only about her the entire 10-minute walk. Which miraculously becomes 8 minutes because she's walking faster than her normal speed. If it wasn't obvious to herself she was anxious already...

So far, Nobara has learned that Maki's been through a lot in her life. They're the same age, but she's already had many obstacles that Nobara hasn't even had to think about. Not having parents, losing her twin sister, then getting adopted by someone as a teenager then moving in the beginning of her second year of high school. It must be hard having to adapt to so much.

In comparison, Nobara's own situation felt stagnant her entire life. Like she was simply waiting for things to happen to her, unable to actually affect the trajectory of her life at all. Complaining to Maki about her problems felt...wrong. The other girl's struggles were much bigger and made hers feel petty

Even so, Maki had made it easy for her to confide in. Maybe it was because of proximity, or the words she had said. It made her feel safe enough to say what she never could. It felt natural. The way she eased into just saying things to Maki that she found hard to put together for so long.

It was nice having someone there who genuinely seemed interested in what she had to say. Maki bothered to have an actual conversation with her that made her feel like she was a person and not a brick wall.
