There was no way to express what Nobara felt in simple terms when she left Maki's house that day.
She couldn't stop thinking about Maki's expression. The way she looked, like she was angry or she wanted to say something more, but Nobara had left before the girl could do just that. She knew if Maki said anything she might have just convinced her to stay. She might have made her confess that she was lying.
Because she was, lying when she rejected Maki. Of that, there was no question.
After leaving Maki alone, she completely blanked out. One minute she was pushing Maki away. The next she was out the house, some amount of walking, maybe sprinting and she was home, up the stairs and in her room. Like she fast-forwarded reality and now she was stuck living in real-time with no exit. The next day was going to be rough. Couldn't she just stay home? Would that be the end of the world? It couldn't possibly, since it already felt like it.
She checks her phone, and lingers over Maki's contact. They were texting not even that long ago. Some part of her expected Maki to say something before she left. Reach out, maybe follow her give her a reason to stay. Make her stay...somehow. Just so it wouldn't be all on her to leave, just so she'd have more of an excuse to be close.
What was she thinking? That they could be friends?
Her mind was racing, but she lay completely still. It felt like the opposite of a manic episode. Her self-esteem was at an all-time low, and instead of feeling like she was at the top of the world, right now she felt like the most disgusting person ever. Like she had absolutely no right to even exist.
Why would Maki try to convince her she was wrong, why would she try to go after her, contact her after this? Nobara strictly told her she didn't know what she was talking about, and that she didn't want Maki to continue to speak to her after they have no more reasons to interact. It would basically be harassment if she did anything other than leave her alone. Maki has always taken her feelings into consideration.
She checks her phone, again, by now it's been hours. Maki hasn't called, texted, anything. Why would she, she reminds her half-awake self again, when she had told Maki not to speak to her anymore.
It wasn't Maki's fault for this, it was Nobara own fault for letting her get hurt. If she stayed away, saying no wouldn't have ever been a problem. There wouldn't have been anything to deny, anything to reject at all because they shouldn't have gotten this close in the first place.
The way she had looked...the expression of pure disbelief, it made Nobara want to take it all back somehow, reverse it, but she was already out of there before she could even really process it.
Now she thinks, it was for the best. She's the one who is the problem. Clearly, by allowing herself to be near Maki had convinced the girl that she liked her. There was no way Maki actually truly did. She just thinks she does.
What was there to even like about her anyway?
"You can't tell me how I feel,"
Nobara already knew she'd say something like that. Fuck.
