The first thing they saw was the corridors of Hogwarts. It was late afternoon, there were students everywhere going about their day. The Liz from memory walked around as if she saw no one. Here and there she stopped and opened the book in her hand.
The notebook.

"What are you writing down?" asked Mattheo, pulling Liz closer to her memory. But the other Liz was already slamming the book shut again and the memory blurred into fog. "This isn't normal is it?" Still Mattheo held her hand. Liz wasn't sure if it was necessary for the spell to keep them touching, but she couldn't let go either.
Something inside her was bubbling, simmering like milk about to boil over.

The fog cleared before Liz could answer anything. Cold stone surrounded her. A cave? Water dripped from the walls and made the floor unsafe. The girl from memory stumbled and staggered. She still held the book in her hand instead of steadying herself against the stones.

"Where are we?" asked Mattheo, turning to Liz.

"I have no idea." Liz swallowed dryly. Yes. She had been here. She felt the clammy cold on her skin, as if she were back on the scene herself. She didn't want to be here. She had been afraid. Why had she gone on anyway?

Just before the end of the cave, she had stopped and opened the book again. This time Mattheo was quick enough to pull Liz along with him.

Are you sure about this? I don't like it here. It's scary.

Please, Liz. I can't do this without you. Just this once. I promise nothing will happen to you.

How can you promise that? You're not here!

Her hands had shaken so violently that her writing was barely legible.

I would never let anything happen to you. You're the only reason for me to be here.

Don't say that corny stuff.

But it's true. I don't know what I'd do without you.

The cave's getting bigger up ahead. Are you sure I can get out of here?

You're almost there. We're almost there.

Whimpering, this Liz had slammed the book shut again and staggered further ahead.

"And you thought you were writing with me?"

Liz hissed at him to shut him up. If he made fun of her now, too, she would die on the spot.

They followed her memory, watching as the edge of the fog cleared. A huge room opened up before them. To the right and left of a wide corridor, the floor sank into murky water. The further Liz walked, the clearer the surroundings became. At regular intervals, meter-high marble snakes stretched out of the water. Instinctively Mattheo and Liz took a step closer.

"What is that?" asked Liz, who had absolutely no memory of those snakes. Of the feeling this place gave her, yes, but not of anything else.

"They're serpents," Mattheo explained, looking up in awe at one of the snakes. "Giant snakes." He stopped and let his gaze wander. "I think," he began, but didn't get to speak further. The memory forced them to catch up to the other Liz.
