The memory had dissolved and catapulted Liz back to the present with Mattheo. They were still holding hands, but Liz could feel the vibration in Mattheo's body. Something was stirring. A realization.
"So?", Luna snapped them both out of their stupor. "What did you see?"
Liz saw Mattheo searching for words. He would reveal something! He would reveal that they -!
"Nothing important," Liz babbled frantically, withdrawing her hand. "I've been more embarrassed than I've ever been," she lied without hesitation as she stood up. The cereal bowl was empty. The memory had found its way back into her consciousness and the spell was complete. "Enough of this. We should all get back to our houses now before someone catches us here."
Liz was well aware of the look between Ginny and Luna, but in front of Mattheo, her friends would not ask her any questions. The three of them had just reached the door when they noticed Mattheo hadn't moved.
"Was it that awful?" whispered Luna, looking back and forth between Liz and Mattheo.
The honest answer would have been yes, but then Liz would have had to explain more to her friends on the spot. Instead, she took a deep breath. "You guys go ahead. I guess I owe Mattheo an apology. I'll see you at breakfast tomorrow, okay?"
Reluctantly, the two witches allowed themselves to be pushed out the door, but Liz won and closed the door behind them. Uncertainly, she remained standing with her back leaning against it. Mattheo was still sitting cross-legged on the floor, staring ahead of him. Seeing him like this, it wasn't even far-fetched that she had mistaken him for his father. Not only did they have the same eyes, they had the same hair, the sharp jawbones.
Liz pushed herself off the door and walked over to her schoolmate. She crouched down and held out her hand to him.
"Lysandra Black. But everyone calls me Liz."
Confused, Mattheo raised his head. "What?"
"We never introduced ourselves. I'm Liz," she explained. She hadn't realized it until now. Mattheo really didn't know her. He hadn't read anything she had written. She was a complete stranger who had behaved horribly after he had rescued her during their first encounter.
Mattheo looked from her hand to her face again. Instead of accepting her offer, he stood up on his own and took a cigarette out of his jacket, which was still on the ground where Liz had dropped it.
"You wrote with my father - this book - you wrote to him," Mattheo stated after the first deep drags on his cigarette. "You opened the chamber for him."
And after another puff. "You recognized him just now, too."
Liz sighed as she straightened up as well. "Yes. I did."
"So you're one of his followers."
Liz pursed her lips. You could tell Mattheo was about to explode. She had to think carefully about what she said now. "My mother, adoptive mother, is quite.... obsessed."
