Crossing a desert for a non-magical being on foot is quiet possibly an impossible task. However Aleisha and myself are powerful magical beings and so it was easy enough with both stamina and cooling enchantments. This desert wasn't an ordinary desert though, it was a direct link to the Lavarian Underworld. This means that there are safeguards in place to protect from the incursion of the dead in the land of the living. Creatures of fingers and teeth roamed the skies devouring anything that flew above the ground. We were also warned by the lizard people of monsters that lived in the desert. We were told that our best option was to find a place called the Sanctuary. A place of hollowed ground where travellers would pilgrimage to meet with gods.
It all sounded pretty ridiculous to me but then here we were in a world of fairies with lizard people, not to mention the fact that I'm a fairy and the girlfriend I'm travelling with is  half dark elf and half god.
"We've got a follower" Allie mentioned quietly from beside me. "I noticed" I quietly replied. I'd noticed the monstrous being only a minute ago. From the quick glance I'd had I'd seen a long snake tail and a dark red body. I had no idea what kind of creature it actually was. Scrying was a magical ability that gods and witches both did to communicate or spy. For witches it took a lot of concentration and a mirror. For me I could scry using  my left eye. Seeing things I wished to see with that eye. I used it now to spy on the creature that was following us. "It looks like some variation of a gorgon. It's male though. I didn't think that was possible" I told Allie hushed. "How do we deal with it?" She asked quietly. "Like this" I said aloud springing a trap I'd just laid. The gorgon screamed as it began to float above the ground rising upwards. A dark cloud covered the sky around it and then quickly moved in on it and devoured it. "I guess that's why it's a no flying area" Aleisha said gulping at what we'd just witnessed. We kept walking and I had to use the same spell at least another half dozen times before nightfall. It seemed like the male gorgons were very common here. We set up our camp and I created some creatures to better guard us. I made some stone golems, knowing that they'd be immune to the gorgons petrificafion. I then put a barrier around the camp itself. It would keep anyone wishing us harm out.
We sat by the camp fire and Allie stated "I wish you could make us something to ride on so we can cross this godforsaken desert faster". We'd been warned by the chieftain of the lizard people that the desert was only permitted to be crossed by feet. We'd be sucked into the underworld if we attempted anything otherwise. I looked at the map for probably the hundredth time this day. "The desert takes two weeks to cross by foot. After a week we should arrive at the Sanctuary and hopefully a god there can open a portal to either the Fae capital or at least the other side of the desert" I told Allie and she rested her head on my shoulder. "I hope Nadia is alright" she said worried about our other girlfriend. "I missed her too" I said staring blankly into the fire. I wrapped my arm around Allies waist and we sat in silence for a good minute thinking about Nadia. I used some magic to summon some smores and some smore sticks. We roasted them over the fire and laughed at each other being goof balls with our smores. We headed into the tent which I had made the inside appear as a replica of our apartment. We slept together that night spooning one another.
Early the next morning we woke up and got ready for another long day of arduous trekking. I created a sandstone abode for the golems and they were happy to live there in exchange for protecting future desert travellers. I figured this would be a great way to make the desert safer for travellers.
The next few days and nights were pretty much the same. On the fifth day we came across a lot of undead. We spied a settlement in the distance and using my scrying ability I could see that it was occupied by vampires.  We decided to give the settlement a wide berth. Vampires were incredibly powerful. Their speed was so incrediblely fast that I doubted even my spellcasting could handle them all. We travelled late into that night, trying to put as much distance between us and the settlement. We made camp around midnight and I created centaur archers as well as golems that night. Centaur archers had eagle eyes and could pierce vampire hearts from a great distance. At around three in the morning they attempted an attack on our camp. It was a blood bath but at least the vampires couldn't pass through my barrier.
When I took the barrier down in the morning there was a blood bath of bones, organs and dried blood everywhere. The only survivors had been a couple of the golems. I'd created ten that night and the vampires had smashed apart eight of them. The centaurs were completely slaughtered. I knew it would tire me out for the day but decided I needed to create an outpost here for other travellers. I created a massive mansion of sandstone, then I created a powerful golden golem capable of making its own stone golems. I couldn't make a permanent barrier to protect the home but I could make a plant beast that could protect the outpost. It would live underground and could make nearly infinite vines with wood barbed thorns. "Do you think that will be enough to protect this outpost?" I asked Allie puffing from the exhaustion that much summoning had caused. Aleisha put her hand on my shoulder. "It's going to have to do. You need to save some energy to get through today" she told me. "I know" I told her.
We pushed onwards that day. I was slower because of how drained that summoning had made me. Gold golems were powerful beings. The school was now one and was now classed as a god. The plant beast had also used a lot of energy. I wanted to make something that would be impossible to kill. That had taken a lot of power.
That night we camped out under the stars. I'd made a barrier and just three regular stone golems. I scryed the outpost I'd made and witnessed the sheer power of the plant. It was absolute carnage. The golem didn't even have to leave the building. I smiled and showed Allie on a mirror. "Worth it" I said grinning. "I doubt they'll attack again" Allie agreed. I laid back and looked at the stars. "I wonder what Nadia is doing right now" I pondered aloud.
