chapter one:
his heir
─────────────────

Rhea Royce was surprised to see her absent husband in the Eyrie. "Come to fuck the sheep? I hear they are quite pretty," Lady Royce jested while stroking her horse's mane.

"You know what I have come for." Daemon's tone was as sharp as his sword. Rhea shook her head fervently. "I will not allow you take her from me." She unsheathed her sword prepared to fight her husband, to which he chuckled. "Put your sword away, we both know who would win this fight." Smirking Daemon's fingers twirled around his Valyrian sword, Dark Sister.

Shaking her head, she pointed the sword towards the dragon prince completely unfazed by his threat. Half of her knew this dreadful day would come — just not this soon. Rhea never claimed to be the best mother nor the most attentive. But, just the thought of having her child ripped apart from her made her heart clench. She was never easy on their girl and in that moment Rhea was filled with nothing but regret. Wishing a thousand times over she could have been kinder, more gentle. But, it was never in her nature to be nurturing.

Even so, she knew Daemon would never be the better option for Ellyra. Their daughter, she feared, would turn too much alike her father. Rhea sensed a greatness from Ellyra, the type that could bring the realm to it's knees. It was a greatness that needed to be harnessed and kept in line. None of which Rhea had confidence Daemon could provide. "Leave now," Rhea commanded after their stare down.

"Dragons are not meant to be caged in a place like Runestone, it is time she fulfills her place as my heir." With Baelon's passing Daemon needed to ensure he had everything in order.

"Ellyra's place is by my side! I will not allow you to take her!" Quickly she pounced onto her horse ready to grab her only child. With just a step too close, Daemon had set the horse off causing the stead to throw the Runestone heir. Unable to move, Rhea did her best not to give Daemon satisfaction of showing her fear. Seeing his estranged wife paralyzed from the fall, Daemon proceeded to get what he came for.

"I knew you couldn't finish! Craven!" Blinking back her tears the Lady Royce huffed, "You will be no better at fatherhood than your own father was!"

Without hesitation Daemon picked up a large rock before bashing his now former wife's head. Groaning, Daemon threw the rock with all his might shattering the stone into pieces. Now because of his former wife, his plans would have to be delayed. He couldn't stay in Runestone and be convicted for the murder of his own wife. Daemon was too sly to be caught for such a petty crime in his eyes. Stealthily he treaded back to the cave he'd left his dragon in and begrudgingly flew back to King's Landing.

Weeks had passed by since the death of Lady Rhea Royce. "Lady Rhea was a unique character. Her kind... is not soon to be seen again." Gerold Royce's words were resonating in Ellyra's head. She could not recognize what she had been feeling as the days passed. Though, what child at age twelve would?
