Chapter Sixteen
Mature scenes ahead
I woke up to a tapping on my shoulder. It was Isaiah. I woke up and brushed my teeth. I was already dressed. I grabbed my bag. I already packed my stuff before I went to bed. I went downstairs and grabbed my shoes. I grabbed Daniel's hoodie. I know I shouldn't wear it but I love him. I don't want to let go of his thoughts. We snuck out the window. I closed my window and got into Isaiah's car. He started driving. I realized I hadn't said anything to him.
"Thanks for doing this."
"No problem. Did you sleep well? You can sleep in here if you want."
"No it's okay. I want to stay awake with you."
He sighed and kept driving. I could tell he was tired.
"Do you want me to drive? I can. You look tired."
"No it's fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Okay."
I turned to look out the window. I remembered I used to do this when I got nervous around Daniel. I started tearing up. I fucking hate that he broke up with me. I want him back. I wish I could be in his arms right now. I took a sniff of Daniel's hoodie, it still smelled like him. Fucking god. I miss him.
"Hey. Kate, what's wrong?"
"Just thinking about Daniel."
"Did you guys get in a fight?"
"No. Worse."
"Did he hit you again?'
"No. He dumped me."
"Kate. Are you okay?"
"Yeah I guess."
"That's not a yes or a no."
"No. I'm not okay. I really loved him and he just broke up with me out of the blue."
"I'm sorry about that Kate. You'll be okay and besides you have me. I'm your best friend."
"Yeah. I guess I do have you."
I'm sad that Daniel dumped me but I guess I could give Isaiah another shot. I mean I think it's just rude to keep him away.
"Hey why are you wearing his hoodie then?"
"I don't know. I guess I must have a habit of putting it on."
"Take it off."
"What?"
"I said take it off. It's only gonna hurt you more if you wear it so take it off. I have an extra hoodie in the backseat. Put that one on."
"Um okay."
This didn't feel right. It felt like I was betraying Daniel in a way. I still put the hoodie on. I hope Isaiah didn't see my scars. It had been two hours. I went to sleep at that time. I didn't feel like crying. It was four am.
"Hey are you hungry? There's a gas station up ahead where you can use the bathroom."
"Um actually yeah but I don't think they're open."
"We can check."
"Okay."
Isaiah drove by the gas station. It was open. Thank god. I needed to go to the bathroom. We got out of the car. Isaiah went to get some "food" and I went to the bathroom.
I washed my hands and walked outside. There was a man standing outside. I walked past him and he reached for my arm.
"Excuse me miss? Do you have any change?"
"I'm sorry, I don't."
"What's a pretty lady like you doing out here all alone?"
"I just needed to use the bathroom but I should really get back to my friend."
"Oh nonsense, come here."
He pulled me towards him but I tried to get out of his grip. I got out. Thank god for my bony wrist.
"I'm sorry but I should really go."
I ran back to the gas station. Isaiah was inside. I walked over to him. I guess he got us cup noodles, because he was standing by the microwave.
"Hey."
"Oh hey Kate. Um, here's a cup of noodles."
He handed me a cup and I almost dropped it. Shit it was hot.
"I'm so sorry Kate. I thought I gave you the cold one. Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. Don't worry about it."
We ate our noodles and then I grabbed a pastry.
"Can I get it? I might get hungry later on."
"Yeah sure."
Isaiah paid and we went back to the car. I looked at my seat and there were tons of snacks there.
"Isaiah. What's this?"
"Oh I knew you would get hungry so I bought you a lot of snacks. It's something I remembered from last year."
"I remember when we went on field trips you would always bring me snacks. When we were in fourth grade you brought me a cupcake but it got stolen by that one kid."
"I remember that! I hit that kid afterwards. You cried because he ate it. I hated him for that."
"Yeah I remember. Wow, time has really passed. I mean in a couple months we'll be going to college. That's kind of scary. Don't you think so?"
"Yeah but I know you'll do okay without me. You've always been able to take care of yourself."
I smiled at him. He smiled back. I moved the snacks and put them in a bag. I sat down and buckled up.
"Weren't we just gonna go one town over. We've passed like seven."
"Just you wait Kate. You'll enjoy where I'm taking you."
"Okay."
We sat in silence so I decided to sleep.
