Chapter 12

I closed my eyes as I determined what I should do. My hand traveled down my side and into my pocket and grabbed my phone. I typed ‘Are Jame and Hunter trustworthy?’ I typed the sentence while looking directly into Jame’s eyes.

“Give me a minute.” I said. “I have to figure out what I can and cannot tell you.”

Soon my phone popped open with two new messages. The first one said, ‘Do what’s right and no one will be harmed.’ I ignored that because it made no sense. The second one said, “You can tell who you want just make sure that they are who you think they are.’ It had a signature of Hades near the bottom.

I smiled and led Jame back inside, but he didn’t go back without a fight. I shoved him with all my might and screamed at him that I had to tell him something.

He twirled in a circle when I finally got him inside. “What do you want?”

I started off slowly. “I have that secret I told you about. Correct?”

                He nodded suspiciously.

“I need to tell you about it.” I trailed off in a distant tone.

He closed his eyes in a defeated manner. “I guess you can tell me, but you better be snappy about it.”

I sat Jame down on the bed before waking Hunter. He was sprawled out on the bed like he was free falling. His arms and legs were almost touching all corners of the bed.

Hunter awoke with a jolt when I prodded him with my finger. “What? Huh? What do you want?” He sputtered out in a half awake sort of voice.

“I need to talk to y’all Hunter.” I stated simply.

I chocked back my words as I faced the two boys. Their eyes were staring intently into mine waiting on an explanation.

“I told you about my secret,” I said. “And I need to know if you can keep my secret.”

They nodded simultaneously, so I continued with, “I have a very special position.” I looked to Hunter for support. The two cousins obviously knew that I was afraid to tell them my secret. “I am a fire child.”

Jame cocked his head to the side when I met his eyes. Then he smiled. Wait. He smiled? I shifted my focus to Hunter who held the same expression. Their expressions held the same look of all-knowing.

Hunter jumped up and hugged me. It wasn’t long before I felt an additional pair of arms engulfing me. I was definitely confused now. “Why are you hugging me?” I questioned.

Hunter nodded to Jame, stepped back, and explained. “We are humans for Hell, Kat. I’m glad you found us trustworthy. For the past twelve years we have connected to you through other people to observe you. When you moved here, when you were four, we all were together.” He looked at Jame. “That is, until two important human-demons moved on.” Jame’s parents.

“How many more are there?” I questioned with a vacant voice. How could they have hidden this from me for this long?

Jame smiled and responded. “It’s just us now and Hunter’s parents. We have done our job well and we are ready to help you find Matt.”

“I am confused. I thought that you didn’t know Matt was missing.”

He winked. “I didn’t, but I am a very good actor if I do say so myself.” Garr! Arrogant much?

“Okay, so why are you helping me?” It took a minute, but he finally responded.

“We are humans too, Kat. We have feelings, but we do have a duty.”

Hunter cut in. “We love you, Kat. The two of us have different feelings in your direction, but we do love you.”

I collapsed into Hunter’s arms. “Did I make the right choice?” I questioned out loud.

               “I don’t know yet, honey. I don’t know.”

For the next two hours I discussed their demonic roles in the underworld. The topic soon strayed to other areas of interest.

“Okay, Jame’s turn. Do you go to church to keep up an image?”

“Yes, I do. I believe in everything about Jesus and God. I do, however work for Satan,” I cut in quickly with an attempted correction.

               “Hades!” I yelled out.

I looked in my direction for a split second. “And love my job.”

“Hunter, what are you thinking about right now?” He looked into my eyes.

“I want to know what is under that tee shirt of yours.”

Sputtering I widened my eyes. “I was not expecting that at all!” He smiled faintly and distantly, before looking back down. Now I knew what he was thinking about and self-consciously covered my chest.

My stomach growled and I knew it was time for some food!

“Let’s go.” I said and crawled off the bed. Scampering to the door I ran the full way down the hall to my car parked outside.

***Ahhh...done. I hope you like it. Kat sure does question herself a lot doesn't she? Ya, I didn't even see that coming. :) Please comment, vote, fan, all that good stuff.**
