3- Shifting

I sent my usual "goodnight" message to my best friend Kat, who answered the same as usual. Tomorrow will be a boring school day, as usual. The only fun part is if I have music or science, when it's lunchtime and breaks.

Anyway, I went to sleep fast that night. Sleeping is like therapy, I mean it feels so great to just lay down, close your eyes and fall into a deep slumber. No thoughts, nobody to disturb the peacefulness of the black screen behind my eyelids. It's also a great way to waste time. When you're bored, you should sleep. Because while you do that you have no notion of time whatsoever, so you could be sleeping for hours and not even know. Like I said. Time wasting.

I feel asleep as quickly as every other night, except the only different thing is that I felt like something was off. Like something would be happening the next day.

I woke up to something unusual the following morning. Normally, I would wake up to my phone buzzing and JARVIS saying "I apologize for the disturbance but it's time for you to wake up. I'm afraid your time to rest is at an end. I must insist that you wake up! Maybe you should've chosen a later time because clearly you don't want to get up-" and then I would shut him up.

But this time, it was quite different. Kat was shaking me telling me to get up. First of all, how did she even get in here? Second, what was so urgent? Maybe I missed my alarm or something. I opened my eyes a little and swatted her hands away, asking why I should get up.

"I'm not joking. You *have* to see this," she told me urgently. I groaned and opened my eyes. Seeing I was in a completely different place, I sat up in my bed. Looking around, I noticed I was in a small room made of wood with two beds and a messily made closet. I looked over at Kat, confused, and then got up to look out the window.

"No way," I said while looking outside in awe. We found ourselves in the Glade. The. Glade. How is that even possible??? I clearly remember going to sleep in my bed last night, dreading the next day to come. I also remember I didn't try to shift that night. So how did this happen?

"How..." I started, turning to Kat. She shrugged and looked outside too. That's when we heard a knock at the door. We both turned around and made our way to the bedroom door, and she ended up opening it. The door opened to find Newt on the other side, and as soon as she saw it was him, she closed the door on his face.

"Why'd you do that?!" I whisper-yelled.

"It was Newt! What did you want me to do?!" she answered back, also whispering. I sighed and opened the door again, Kat standing behind me. I smiled weirdly at him and he started speaking.

"What..." he started, seemingly lost in thought. "Why are you girls not ready yet? You missed breakfast!" he said in his thick British accent.

"Oh, uhm... We just... We weren't feeling great great you know..." I said, trying to find an excuse.

"Is everything alright? What happened?" he spoke, concerned. He slightly pushed me aside and entered the room to go over to Kat. He looked at her intently and that's when I got the hint and left them alone. I slowly walked out of the room, noticing how I was already in the clothes I'm supposed to wear during the day. I walked out of the homestead, wondering what my job is. Sure, it's literally insane that I somehow shifted with Kat to the Maze Runner without even doing anything, but I don't even know what job I'm assigned to.

I speed-walked to the kitchen to find food because I'm hungry, of course, and bumped into Alby on the way.

"Good morning to you too, Liv. What happened, Kat forgot to wake you up?" he said teasingly. "What- oh yeah. Yeah, she forgot. I guess I can say we overslept. Sorry about that," I answered, still taking in my surroundings. I cleared my throat and smiled his way before continuing my walk to the kitchens.
