You rubbed your eyes as you sat up, still groggy from lack of sleep. This cold case is really getting to me, I'll be glad to finish this assignment. I just hope I can at least find some new evidence. You raise your arms in an attempt to stretch out the stiffness overtaking your body while letting out a loud yawn. Grabbing your phone, you send Matsuda a quick text confirming he was able to meet today before traipsing off to the bathroom to get ready for your day.

You walk into the small cafe, finding a seat away from the other early morning patrons and look over the menu. As the waitress comes up to the table you order a latte and (fave breakfast food). A few minutes pass and you see Matsuda walk into the cafe and scan the room, his eyes settling on you as he gives a small wave before walking over and taking the seat across from you.
"Good morning (f/n)" he greets, his voice sounding as tired as you felt.
"Good morning to you to" your smile shining as he glances at the menu. "I appreciate you helping me with my project today, I know you must be really tired so it means a lot." The dark haired man nods his head, his sleepy smile brightening as he opens his mouth to speak.
Just as Matsuda was about to reply the waitress returns with your food and drink and takes Matsuda's order. A few moments of silence go by before she returns and places more food in the table.
"So, Kagome Ishida was a victim in the string of abductions years ago..." you begin reviewing the case details with Matsuda, filling him in on the specifics and getting his opinion on your interview questions.
—— L's POV ——
It was an obnoxiously bright day, the sun high in the sky already even though it was still early morning. I was following my usual routine, looking forward to my usual tea and strawberry cake. If I follow my normal routine I'm 80% positive it will improve my thinking process. I need to redirect my thoughts to the Kira case, instead of being focused on that girl. Though, I have to wonder how she is connected to it all, she must be involved at some level, perhaps she even knows Kira personally. As my thoughts wander I find myself asking questions with no current answers, before I realize it I've already arrived at the storefront of a certain little cafe.
As I reach for the door, something makes me pause. "My (f/n). Here with Matsuda. This is our cafe, our place. Why would she spoil the memory of our first date by being here with him." My mouth forms into a tight frown, my quiet words coming out as an angry grumble. Turning slowly, I take a seat at the patio table outside and watch both individuals closely, imagining what their conversation consists of. Each small smile that graces (f/n)'s features causing an unfamiliar pang of emotion to stir within me.
"This is becoming an issue. It doesn't matter any longer if (f/n) is using Matsuda for information on the Kira case or not, I cannot allow them to grow closer." My words are loathsome, almost menacing and it surprises me that such emotions belong to me. I know what I must do to ensure I remain in control of our little game. I hope you are ready (f/n), because I am giving this game my undivided attention now.

—— Reader's POV ——
"What a long day." You stretch your arms out in front of you before turning to meet Matsuda's gaze. "Thank you again for agreeing to help me today, I believe Ms. Ishida's interview will help this case along."
"It was no problem at all!" Matsuda replies excitedly, a large smile plastered onto his face. He exits his vehicle before hurrying to the passenger side and opening your door, offering his hand to help you out.
"Such a gentleman." You chuckle, giving him your hand and allowing him to walk you to your door.
"Just so you know, you did really good during the questions, and just let me know if you need anything else for the case, I will be happy to help however I can." Matsuda's smile grew as he complimented you.
You both said your goodbyes and parted ways as he returned to his car. You gave a small wave before watching him drive away.
"They say if you love what you do then you'll never work a day in your life, but I'm starting to believe who you're with is what makes the difference." You nodded, agreeing with your own hypothesis before starting to hum happily as you unlocked the door and entered your apartment.
Turning on the lights, you stopped as you noticed a small package sitting in the floor. It appeared to be a small box that was perfectly wrapped in plain black paper. (f/n) (l/n) was written in white on the top, but there was nothing to identify where the package had come from or who sent it.
"It would have to be from my family," You concluded aloud, "they are the only ones who have a spare key to my apartment. Disregarding any existing doubts, you unwrapped the package to find a small, black velvet box. You opened it to find a thin, gold chain with a pendant hanging from it. The pendant was small, and shaped like a detective's badge, both sides were engraved, the front contained your initials while the back had the word 'Law'.
Smiling warmly to yourself, as you placed the jewelry around your neck, you made a mental note to thank your family for the beautiful gift the next time you saw them.
