Chapter 2

The person who was walking towards me was no man. He was a beast stalking his prey. He was built to perfection, the kind of man that didn't skip leg day or any day at the gym. There was no need for the axe, compared to him, it looked like a prop. Just a tap from this man's hands would send anyone to the pack hospital.

He walked towards me, the pebbles on the ground crunching under his weight. I surveyed the area hoping someone would jump to my rescue but all of them had their mouths hanging with their eyes bulging out of their sockets. The place that was previously thrumming with excitement mixed with hatred and a twinge of arousal had fallen quiet.

I turned to the hunter. He had a simple outfit, a hood that obstructed his face but left his arms bare. I didn't need to look into his eyes to know he was hardened. The tale was on his arms, littered with wounds so many of them deep and crisscrossing one another.

A tale of struggle and even though I tried to pay attention to anything else but the axe, I couldn't.

It was obvious how familiar the thing was to the man. From the way his hands caressed the belly and even just his grip. Every move he made, how easy it was for him to throw it in the air and catch it with his eyes trained on me told me all I needed to know.

He was the executioner and he did this for a living.

My eyes darted as I searched for an exit, beads of sweat forming near my temple, but there was none. My brain kept trying to plan an escape plan, searching for words to say, but there were none.

"Wait, a minute. Where's the evidence of her crime? The Alpha lied before; what's saying this isn't another lie?"

The voice came from somewhere in the back, carried by the breeze, creating ripples in the otherwise still waters. People began screaming for proof of my crime.

Before I could smirk, I heard Hela snicker from afar. She waved her hands in the air till an image formed in my mind. No matter how many times I shook my head, it didn't disappear. the moment I escaped from the pack and found the rogues den, shaking hands with the leader and showing them where to strike. Even leading the Luna to where she was going to die.

It was there for everyone to see.

Squeezing my face, I knew what it looked like, and despite how much I wanted to scream the truth, nothing came out.

I was doomed.

>Stop trying. We sealed our fate the moment Mikalya set foot in the pack. It's time we accept our fate.<

The voice in my head, jolted me till I was crying. My wolf, Amaris had been quiet since the moment our mate threw us into the dungeon. She'd blocked all contact probably licking her wounds. Even now, there was no hint of joy at speaking to me. Only a feeling of resentment.

>Amaris, does this mean you forgive me?< I said, tear falling, as I took the chaotic environment in as my last picture.

>I was never angry with you, Miriam. I needed time alone to understand everything. You didn't want to go with the plan initially, but I pushed it on you. If I had given us time to think it through or find other ways to show the pack the truth, we wouldn't be here. It's not your fault.<

>Don't. We're in this together. At least you'll be able to reincarnate.<

>I might not remember my past lives, but one thing I know is true is that I've never connected with a human like I do with you. Coming back into this world without you doesn't feel right. And not even a chance with Ruben can change my mind.<

>I wish we weren't leaving him in the hands of that witch, though. Anyone but her.<

>Me too.<

''Enough! Our Alpha has spoken and you have seen the truth. Despite our Alpha's efforts to get Miriam to say the truth, she kept her mouth shut. As is with our traditions, the betrayer Miriam Wolfester is hereby sentenced to death.''

''Burn her at the gallows.'' Someone said and threw a tomato at me. The shock of the vegetable bursting and the stinging pain from its juices weren't enough to stop the pain that was flooding her heart.

''She's not a witch, idiot.''

''Kill her!'' Another one said and the crowd cheered like they were watching a sports program and not condemning someone to their deaths.

''I never liked her, anyway.''

"Maybe she killed the Luna because she was jealous. She probably wanted Ruben all to herself."

''You know, I pity her mate. That's how he'd walk the rest of his life, not knowing what killed his mate. That she died because of her jealousy of another woman's mate.''

''Kill her!''

The remarks continued. Everyone was throwing whatever they could get their hands on at her. And through it all, Ruben looked down from his spot with Hela's arms slinking across his chest and resting her head on his arm. No one paid them attention, or even wondered why she was draped like that on him.

Every time I tried to speak, to say the truth, Hela brought her finger to her lips and I became mute.

>Amaris, are you there?<

>I'm here, Miriam. Always and forever.<

The executioner raised the axe above his head, and I shut my eyes. As he moved to bring it down, severing my head, I heard a sound. I opened my eyes and watched as a young boy burst through the forest, blood on his face, clothes ruined, before he collapsed on the ground.

''WE'RE UNDER ATTACK!''

Shocked at his presence and messy look, the guards shot from the ground, looking at each other before moving towards the boy. The executioner stood near me but had dropped his axe in favour of watching the drama unfold.

The men took each step like their legs weighed a tonne, moving in a single file, keeping their bodies close to the ground.

''You have shitty security.''
