''Alpha, are you sure this girl is your mate? She's -''

''Of course, I'm sure. Look at her, doesn't she look worthy of being my mate?''

''I'm trying my hardest to look, Alpha. I'm not seeing anything special-''

Who was that? Was someone talking?

''So we're just going to take her to our pack and hope for the best? Is that really our plan?''

''I mean, what else can we really do? The Alpha told us she's his mate.''

''Do you think the rest of the pack will accept her? I'm not trying to be rude, but look at her!''

What's going on? Why can't I remember anything? It's so dark...

>Go to sleep, Miriam. The time's not right for you to wake up.<

''But aren't you the least bit curious? She killed Mikalya. I mean, does the girl look like she can hurt a fly?''

''Look in the mirror before opening your mouth. Do you also look like you could hurt a fly? Your looks are so misleading.''

''But I'm just a simple girl. You can't hold that against me.''

''I distinctly remember you laughing so hard while slashing through many Andromeda Warriors with your claws. What about the times during training when you wiped the floor with Silas' butt? Anyone who judges you based on your looks or small build only has themselves to blame.''

''So you don't think she might be innocent? Innocent until proven guilty like they say in those your movies?''

''I guess we'll have to wait until we find out. Wouldn't we?''

''How much do you want to bet on her innocence?''

''I bet--''

''Shush! Alpha said he doesn't want her awake until we get to the pack. We still have a long road ahead so keep shut and hydrate. Unless you want to find yourselves under his foot, shut up.''

''But aren't y-o-u the least bit curious? Nobody ever thought our Alpha would find his mate. Definitely not in this lifetime at least.''

''Keep your mouths shut. And get moving.''

No, please, don't stop him from talking. Continue...

...

>WAKE UP,MIRIAM!<

With my eyes wide open, I at first couldn't understand what had happened. Though I realized I was on a bed, covered to my neck in a warm, fluffy blanket, my bones still ached.

Unable to piece the events together, I snuggled deeper into the bed to fall asleep, but I felt a prickling sensation. Someone was watching me. As my fingers gripped the duvet, I turned my head to the side and stared into the eyes of a man.

Blink!

Blink!!

Blink!!!

Screaming, I pushed myself far from him, scrambling till I fell flat on my ass. Disoriented, I laid there like a starfish, eyes drawn to the ceiling for a few minutes.

I tried racking my mind, hoping to find a solution, but I watched as he popped in my peripheral, waving his hands at me.

''Who the hell are you? Hold on, the right question is where the hell am I?''

Disoriented by his presence and the fall, it was why I hadn't realized that I wasn't in my room. I tried fishing through my mind, hoping to remember what had happened, but I couldn't. There was something keeping my memories from me.

The only person who could have done that was myself. But I didn't, it had to have been Amaris.

>Amaris, are you there?< I shouted into the space. I found her lounging on a patch of grass as she stretched her body.

>I'm here, Miriam. What's the matter?< she replied.

>Why can't I remember what happened to me? How did I land here?<

>Leave it alone, Miriam. Some things are best left in the past, never to be dug up.<

>But shouldn't I have the chance to decide that myself?<

>I'm warning you, Miriam. You wouldn't be able to stomach it.< Amaris said.

>You don't get to decide that for me.<

But she had closed the link, and I was stuck throwing words at a proverbial wall.

While I was speaking to Amaris in my mind, the strange man had moved me from the floor and dropped me on the bed. At first, he left me alone, but then he joined me, his eyes fixed to the ceiling.

The ease with which he settled on the bed, breathing like nothing was wrong, reminded me of this god-awful romance movies mama loved.

Mama!!!

I hadn't noticed when I jumped from the bed. How could I have forgotten about her? Twisting around, I tried finding something that pointed to her having been in the room but I couldn't. Where was she? Where was I?

The room, though comforting, was strange and offered no sense of familiarity to me. Maybe it was because I loved interior design shows I could tell the reason behind the motives of the colour scheme, but despite their valiant efforts, I still didn't feel at peace in the room.

I had only said a few words, the man kept his mouth shut, choosing to watch as I descended into a frenzy from my emotions. With unanswered questions and a wolf who refused to talk, I was on edge. And no matter how many times, I felt myself getting drawn into those beautiful eyes; I had to stay on guard.

As my thoughts bounced around, straying to the golden eyes with grey flecks, I tried my best to focus on the present condition. I had woken up in the best bed I had ever laid in, came face to face with a strange but handsome man, did not know where my mama was and was in someone else's clothes.

Hold on a minute. Clothes? Whose clothes were I wearing and how did I get into them?

Too big to have been a girl's own and, from the scent, it had to have been a guy. My brain refused to listen to the connection my mind had made between the man before me and the clothes I had found myself in. All I could hope was that he hadn't been the one to change me.

"Mama? Where's my mama?"
