He wasn't kidding. Despite watching me laugh at his words, Trenton said nothing. Instead, he leveled me with a gaze so bright and full of hope. It was unnerving. Sure, I had heard of things like second mates, a blessing and a curse in disguise, but statistically, not many werewolves were fortunate enough to receive such a blessing.
Even if the moon goddess wanted to mess with me, this was too much. A second mate within days of losing my first? Even after everyone in my pack, now dead thought I had murdered their so-called luna, a second mate, and an alpha?
"This is a joke, right? It has got to be. So where's the hidden camera, the punchline? Or maybe my ears weren't working properly, and I had misheard you."
"Nope. You heard me correctly. And there's no punchline or hidden camera. What I said is the truth; you're my mate. From the moment I set my eyes on you, I realized it. Are you telling me you don't feel the tingles and everything?"
I took a deep breath, wondering how to break the news to him. Was there anything I could say that wouldn't make me sound less of a douchebag?
He sounds like he's been waiting for his mate.
"Alpha Trenton, I'm sorry if this isn't what you want to hear, but it's impossible. I mean, who wouldn't think you're a handsome man? Even a blind person can tell, but I already have a mate, and it certainly isn't you."
He growled, raising his fist and throwing it into the wall. The noise shocked me, and I curved into myself, afraid of what he might do to me.
"You're lying. There's no way you have a mate. Tell me you're lying!" His voice bellowed around the room, I felt the need to submit, bare my neck in submission, but the fear held me down.
"I... I can't. You're scaring me," I said, and he stopped. Just like that, his frightful aura dissipated, and we were left to stew in our thoughts.
Clearing his throat, "I apologize for my previous actions. It wasn't part of my plan to scare you."
I nodded my head though I kept the distance between us and even widened it by some. The door was in view, the window was there but Amaris wasn't. She'd left me alone and the thought of jumping out of a window without her presence and help terrified me.
"How old are you? If you claim you have a mate, then obviously you should be of age, right?"
"I'm sixteen, close to seventeen, though," I said. I should smile about getting older but without my mom, Reuben...how could I even be happy without them by my side?
"You're sixteen? Then how come you know your mate?"
I said nothing, and he sighed. "Here's what we'll do. Well, wait till you're eighteen, and if there's no mate pull between us, then I'll know I was mistaken and let you go?"
"You wouldn't ask me who my mate is?"
He chuckled. "There's no need for me to ask such a foolish question. It's likely from your pack, and I'm sorry if this is insensitive of me, but that means he's dead. To think that I've been waiting for six years for a mate, and after finding her, I get rejected without a second thought."
Maybe I wasn't to hear the last part, but I did and watched him smile before walking to the door. Palm resting on the knob, he turned to me smiling, even as his face was downturned.
"This room now belongs to you, do with it however you please. I'm not keeping you hostage, and you're free to go out whenever you like. Just don't head out of the pack without letting any of the guards know. If you're hungry, then go down the hallway to the staircase. Once you get to the bottom, turn to your left, and you'll find the kitchen. Mrs. Freeman should be there. You can ask her for something to eat."
