The pack and I had been so focused on Trenton and his strange wolf that we failed to notice the wolves in the forest until it was too late. They jumped, claws and fangs ready to sink into flesh.
I couldn't tear my eyes from the chaos and carnage as I watched my pack members met their ends.
Bodies were thrown in the air, throats slashed and limbs thrown askew as Trenton's pack destroyed mine. In the mayhem, I struggled, to search for a place to hide but couldn't find one.
There was no second to think. All that mattered was my survival.
Thud!
Scream!
As the shivers ran up my spine, the hairs on my hand bristled. It was difficult making my way through the corpses of the humans and wolves that littered the ground. Afraid to see another soulless body, I shut my eyes, using my hands to find my way.
Though I didn't want to think of it, I knew what my fingers wadded through, the wet substance that stuck to my fingers. It was the blood of the fallen warriors.
The urge to wretch overwhelmed me.
With each new breath, I felt like I was dying and soon I couldn't tell what was real or not. The sun was no longer shining, the sounds of battle grew louder and with each groan and plead for mercy, my mind cracked. I couldn't take it again.
Was I actually going to die today?
Hands spread out, I used them to navigate till I hit something. It was stiff, warm but was growing colder the more I touched it. Afraid to open my eyes, I tried feeling some more and when I touched a sticky part; I forced them open.
There, before me, was the body of a warrior. Petrified, I turned to escape, but someone pushed me till I landed on the body. As my eyes roamed the face, I remembered who it was; it was another pack member. Scrambling to my feet, I raised my hands to my face, covering my eyes. I didn't remember they were bloodied until a drop landed on my tongues.
I felt when my grasp on reality snapped.
In my hurry to run from that corpse, I bumped into others before falling on a pile of them and coming face to face with familiar people.
Surrounded by corpses, I felt my skin itch till I couldn't take it anymore, hurrying till I hit a rock.
"Don't kill me! Please don't kill me!! Don't kill me-" I changed till my voice became hoarse.
Dissociated from reality, I failed to notice the man creeping behind me till he dropped his hand on my shoulder. Before I could scream, he drapes his other hand on my mouth and made a slicing motion before dragging me away.
Even though we were in the middle of a heated battle, our path to his side was relatively free of wolves killing one another. Safe for the time being, I watched as the werewolves from Trenton's pack tore my friends and family into shreds.
Unable to watch anymore, I dropped my head in my thighs, shutting my ears to the world.
"It's going to be okay. Everything will be alright," I repeated, rocking back and forth.
The chaos continued for a while, and then it was silent. Scared to open my eyes, I peeked over my arms and when nothing came to me; I lifted my head.
Never in my life would I forget the carnage and destruction my pack faced at the hands of Alpha Trenton. There was no strip of land bare of bodies mangled beyond recognition and piled on one another. My pack had been destroyed, and I was left alone.
Why?
"It is finished-" Trenton said as he stretched his hands to my pack, standing on the rock Ruben was previously.
"Alpha, it's not the time for theatrics. We have to get moving if we hope to make it back to the pack within the week."
More of them exclaimed, and I watched as a few, dropped on the floor using their clothes to wipe their faces.
"But didn't I look cool? Like a character from a movie?"
"Sorry to disappoint Alpha, but all you did was look pitiful. Now get down, we have unfinished business to attend to."
It was me they were talking about. They must have left me as the last kill. But I wasn't interested in finding that out. I needed to escape. Getting up, I stumbled a bit before I turned and moved to escape.
I didn't get far as the chains wrapped around my legs, pulling me down.
"Did she just try to escape? And tripped?"
I tried crawling away, hoping to save myself from the embarrassment but stopped when someone stood in my way. Head raised, I found Trenton, holding out his hand and smiling at me.
"Hello. What's your name?"
"Why do you want to know my name?"
I knew without turning; I had said the wrong thing. The glares of his people burned their way through my clothes, a classic sign of wrongdoing. Before I could apologize, I heard someone cough and make a weak noise like a protest of some sort.
It was Ruben.
His body was littered with various scratch marks, a sign of how much suffering he had gone through under the hands of Trenton and his cohorts. Even with his injuries, Ruben still crawled before us, waving his finger at me.
"Leave her alone, she's mine," he croaked, coughing up some blood.
"No, she's not."
"She's from my pack. She killed my mate!"
"And for the last time, that girl wasn't your mate."
Even though both men were Alphas, it was plain to see who the stronger was. Amaris had kept quiet during the battle and still didn't want to speak. She was content with watching both men duke it out.
"Even if she wasn't my mate, she killed a member of the pack unprovoked. She deserves to be punished."
"Ruben, the greatest thing you can learn about being an Alpha is knowing when to stand down. Now is the time for that."
Trenton walked to me, pulling me by the hand before he yanked the chains from my body. Unable to keep my mouth shut, I asked him a question.
"Aren't you going to kill me? Or is this a new method of torture?"
"You little brat! Who do you think you're talking to?"
"Silence, Silas! Ha, that rhymed."
The man, Silas, opened his mouth, but after hearing his Alpha's words, shut them and turned away.
"What's your name?"
"Miriam."
"That is such a beautiful name. Perfect for the woman who is my mate."
I blinked. Did it again.
Amaris and I couldn't hold our shock. In fact, we could see nothing because at that moment;
I fainted.
