Samantha Dalton, the CEO of Dalton Enterprises, is dumbfounded when she meets hardcore no-nonsense Anna Schuyler in an interview to be the next Head of the Environmental Chemistry division at her biotech billionaire company, an interview that could...
TW // EPILEPTIC EPISODE. Anna's POV: I'm in a meeting with potential investors for the Environmental Chemistry division, along with my team and Sam, trying to wrap everything up. I shouldn't have come to work today; i was up puking at midnight. And no, it wasn't from too much vintage wine. Some chemists wheel in a portable CT scanner into the conference room, which is the basis of our demonstration. "Dalton Enterpises is the future of biotechnology. In the environmental labs, that means finding a way to make a real, sustainable difference without sacrificing our gold standard. We've developed a plastic alternative for brain scans that'll reduce the ecological footprint of the medical community exponentially, but that's just the beginning. The possibilities for how this tech can be used are endless. If you can dream it, we can help." the investors and Sam nod along, their interested piqued. I run through my points one by one. "As you can see from these figures, our plastic alternative is not only carbon-neutral to produce, but it's less expensive in the long run." "That's all well and good, but i'd like to see this prototype of yours. Where is it?" an investor asks. i turn my head and search my eyes to find it, but it's nowhere to be seen. It's possible another person has it. I signal for someone to retrive it, but they all shy away. "One second, if you please." i step outside of the conference room and take a deep breath, my team following closely behind. "Where's the prototype? It was on the CT scanner where i left it last night!" "We think the physics department destroyed it. They've been gunning for us for weeks now." as they erupt into small conversations about the so-called 'debacle', i silence them hush. "And why the hell did you wait until now to tell me?!" "We didn't think they'd want to see it?" idiots. I'm working with idiots. God, i hope Charles, Kai and Aditya come back to work off sick soon. Until an idea pops into my head, i dismiss them, finding them of no use. I walk back into the room. "Well? We'd like to see what you've created, Ms Schuyler." i plaster on a fake smile to cover the anger in my soul. "I'm so glad you asked." i gesture to the CT scanner. What audience doesn't love a live demo? "We had this CT scanner retrofitted with pieces of our plastic alternative, and also included it in the material of the printouts. I'd be happy to print out a scan for you." to add to the demonstration, i decide to include an investor to be the model for the scan. After removing all metal accessories, i take my place behind the computer and start the machine. "Whilst the computer works it's magic, does anyone have any questions?" one potential investor metaphorically steps forward, "Changing anything in the medical field seems risky. How will you convince the industry to adopt your tech?" "The power of marketing. We've created an exciting product. With the right advertising strategy, we're sure it's only a matter of time before everyone's adopted it." "And what is the chemical makeup of your alternative?" "We've built it using lignin-based polymers, which come from the cell walls of plants. It's the most organic plastic alternative currently in production." Sam looks at me with wide eyes, "I didn't even know that was possible." i grin, triumphant. "It wasn't... until us." as the CT scan finishes, i print out the scan and hold up the end result. "As you can see, there's no discernible difference between our new scans and the traditional options." i feel my head spin momentarily, and a light daze corrupting in my stomach which i smooth over with my palm. Just a few more minutes and i can relax. "It's sleek, it's effective, and it's never been done before. I love it." the other investors murmur in agreement, and Sam flashes me a proud smile. "Well done." she mouths over to me. "Thanks." i reply.
