Samantha Dalton, the CEO of Dalton Enterprises, is dumbfounded when she meets hardcore no-nonsense Anna Schuyler in an interview to be the next Head of the Environmental Chemistry division at her biotech billionaire company, an interview that could...
Sam's POV: I pour my best bourbon into two tumblers evenly, an indication is given for me to top it up more, which i dismiss. "No, Serenity. You might be my favourite sister, but i'm not wasting all of my expensive liquor on you." she groans, untriumhpant. "Tight ass." i ignore her and take an empty seat on the couch. "Care to tell me what prompted this midnight awakening? You live in Boston dammit, and you hate driving." "Can't a girl just need her big sister?" "I suppose, but you're a strong woman, Serenity. You don't call me unless you absolutely have to." she sighs, and snuggles her face into my collar bone, hinting a hug. "Ezra left me again." i roll my eyes in a semi circle, exhausted. Ezra is the on again/off again fiancé. Whilst i might be unwise in choosing my love interests, my sister is far worse. "Good." "Excuse me?" "My little sister is the smartest Cardiothoracic surgeon America has to offer, and he's a bastard who values sex over your beautiful self." "Awh, Sammy, you called me beautiful!" "Ugh, you're such a sap." my sister visiting spontaneously is just what i needed to take my mind off of Anna. I begrudgingly left her penthouse 4 hours ago, and i've been spiralling since. Anna could be seizing right now, and i have no idea about it. "Sam? Are you listening to me?" "What? Oh yeah, sure." "Really? Then what'd i say?" "... i don't have to explain myself to you." "Rude. Is it a girl? I feel like it's a girl." "Woman, i'll have you know." "Spill!" "No. I don't need you fan-girling over my love life." "How could i when it's virtually non-existent? My love life is in tatters, let me gush over yours! Please?" she pulls a fake pout. "That pout worked on mom and dad when we were little, but it doesn't work on me, Serenity." "Okay so this woman..." i groan childishly, feeling as if my childhood is replaying itself all over again in a hellish illusion. "Is she hot?" "Very..." "Smart?" "As fuck." "Now we're talking... how far in are you?" "Too deep for my own comfort. This is what i do. I fall for women i really really shouldn't..." i cast a glance to the photo that hangs in a frame on my coffee table of me, and my late wife, Ember Dalton. Serenity places her hand over mine in comfort. "You didn't know E was going to die, Sammy." "I know, i... i know... the woman i'm attracted to fell ill earlier today and i couldn't... i felt as if-" "It was happening all over again? I have the same feeling about dad. It's not fair we loose people, good people, who didn't deserve it." "Ember was my whole world. How can i make someone else the center of that world who i'll eventually loose?" "I don't have the answer Sammy, but i do know that you're the strongest badass i've ever met, and you don't do things without a good reason behind it. This woman must have a good head on her shoulders to let you into her life." i might be 7 years older than my sister, but her wise words sink into my skull as i intake every syllable she speaks. "She does... what scares me the most is that she's so much like Ember. Fierce, hardcore... bratty, at times. There's something in her soul that makes me feel so... alive." when i think i'm having serious moment, Serenity only snorts and swallows a mouthful of the alcohol. "You're so fucking poetic, i laugh to death inside." sometimes, i wish i was an only child. That's a lie, i don't. I might've grown up in a house where i had most of the control, and maybe that made me miss out on any kind of attempts at juvenility, but it made me into the person i am today. Taking care of people is what i do; first with my sisters, then with Ember and now with Anna. The thoughts of my late wife peak up in my mind, sparking up a memory... which i push out. Why dwell on the past when the future is so much more captivating? "Does this woman of yours have a name?" "She does, one that you will not be learning." "Oh, come on Sam, your life is so boring, this is the one glimmer of hope that'll convince me you're not an emotional-less robot." "There's a reason why we talk about your dating life and not mine. Yours is far more entertaining." i run my hands through my long blonde locks, enjoying my relaxation from the one woman whom i want to be attached to, yet need space to breathe from at the same time.
