"Are you going to the hospital?" Katie asks me as we step out in to the parking lot, walking over to her car.
"Yeah. I might not stay for my full shift, but I want to go and check up on Britt, at least. And I think Kelsey is pretty mad at me." I tell her, a small frown appearing on my face afterwards.
I've been so caught up thinking about Max (and maybe Caden) all day that I didn't even think about what to tell Kelsey about the other day. I guess I could just tell her the truth, but I'm not sure Caden would appreciate that too much. I don't want to tell other people about him and Max unless he wants me to. I should really ask him about that...
"Okay. Maybe after your shift you can come over today?" she asks, looking over hopefully at me as Adam walks over and drapes an arm over her shoulders, tugging her against him protectively.
"I can't tonight. I'm really busy." I tell her, my mind flashing to Max for a brief moment before focusing back on her. "Tomorrow, maybe."
"Yeah." she says, deflating a little. "I feel like you've been canceling more often." she says, tilting her head to the side.
Smiling weakly at her, I shrug. "I've just been busy."
"You seem more exhausted than usual. Are things getting tougher at the hospital?" Adam asks, looking slightly concerned.
"No, not really. And even if things were getting a little tougher at the hospital, I wouldn't quit. I love it there." I tell him, a small smile on my face.
"You could quit, though. If you wanted too. I'm sure they would understand. It's your senior year, you shouldn't be so drained all the time." he say softly, looking at me with a stern sort of fatherly glance.
"You're starting to sound like Katie." I mumble, running a hand through my hair. "And I need to keep saving up for college. Those textbooks won't buy themselves." I scold him, wagging my finger in his face.
"Whatever." he laughs out, pushing my hand away
Before I get the chance to reply, though, a car horn blares through the air around us.
Looking over, my eyes go wide when I see Caden pull up next to Adam, Katie, and I.
"Who the hell is this?" Katie asks, looking at the car's tinted windows.
"Um, my ride. He drove me to school this morning." I mumble, shifting in place awkwardly.
"He?" Katie asks, a grin on her face, her features lighting up.
"Yes, he." I grumble, opening the back door and throwing my backpack in to the back seat, Caden giving me an impatient glance.
"Hurry up." he says, turning in his seat to look at me.
"Why didn't you just call me? Now they'll probably see you, stupid. I don't think you want my friends to find out it's you who's giving me a ride home. Adam would probably beat the shit out of you." I tell him under my breath.
"I'd like to see him try." Caden huffs.
"Don't be so full of yourself, Caden." I say in a mocking tone, before turning back to Katie and Adam who are looking at me quizzingly.
"So are you going to tell us who that is. I'm not trying to be mean, but me and Adam are pretty much your only friends, so I'd like to know who you suddenly got to give you rides to school." Katie says tapping her foot impatiently against the pavement.
"Josh's friend?" I say, it coming out like more of a question than I planned.
"Bella, get in!" Caden shouts. "This is getting ridiculous, we have to pick up Max!"
