Andrew
Ridiculous. That’s what Luna is. Ludicrous to think that we will ever be together. Not like she’s necessarily bad, but I’d pick almost anybody else over her.
Luna emerges from the tree a few minutes after I do, stepping into the clearing to join the conversation. Everyone is discussing my idea of banning official private conversations, but we all know that Harriet and Alex almost certainly won’t agree. It’s not like they’re going to be willing to make out in public. Or whatever this island is classed. We’re trying to decide how will be best to present it to them, without making it sound like we’re obstructing they’re relationship. So far, we haven’t been very successful. But I know one thing for sure, it can’t be me presenting the idea.
“If I were you, I’d stop talking. Harriet and Alex are on their way.” Luna says, interrupting our conversation casually.
“That’s means we need to be more prepared.” I say. “And quickly.”
“I think we should just present it how it is. And stop making a big deal about it.” Courtney is hushed as Luna holds out her hand, and I can hear the rustling leaves made by approaching footsteps. Alex and Harriet emerge into the clearing, silent and casual. Alex looks around at all of us, silent, and in a semi-circle formation.“Umm… hi.” He says, standing next to Luna to add to the circle. Harriet stands next to him.
“Hi.” I say, avoiding his gaze. There’s an awkward silence.
“There’s something we’d like to say.” Courtney says. She looks around at us all, her eyebrows slightly raised, and we all give a mutual nod. She nods back, and clears her throat.
“What is it?” Harriet asks.
“We want to ban private talks.” Courtney states. Half of our group seem frozen in shock by this sudden proposal, including Harriet.
“…Why?” She asks slowly.
“We think you have to much of them.” Luna says. “Whatever you’ve got to say, whatever you’ve got to do, you don’t have to hide it from us.”
Alex nods.
“Yes. We’ve got something to say too.” Harriet steps back slightly, and stares at no one in particular.
“What?” I ask.
“Well. Me and Harriet have decided that we are together.” Harriet blushes slightly, looking at the floor.
“But we are not doing anything staged so we can ‘prove’ anything.” He adds quotation marks as he says the word “prove”.
My heart aches. Although I guessed it, I hadn’t completely moved on from Harriet. I knew they were kissing, but they weren’t together, at least not officially. I had a chance to get her back, but instead I was tied to a tree, and I didn’t even bother to fight. Alex doesn’t seem depressed anymore, infact, he seems ecstatic as he hugs and kisses Harriet later. He smiles and makes jokes now. Our roles have reversed. I am him, sad, jealous, and longing for Harriet to choose me. And he is me, happy, joyful, blinded by Harriet’s beauty and love, believing that there is no possible way that the love can be broken. Not even hoping, just knowing, just suspecting. Oblivious to the pain that can be lashed across your heart, and through your body like a whip. Oblivious to the unbelievable sensation where the world seems to be crumbling and every time you get close the ceiling cracks and a boulder traps you from her, and you can hear her walk away, not even trying to get back. But now I am haunted by her, by her kiss, by her face, by her hair and even by her name. About everything she revealed that Alex has stolen from me. Now anger fills me, before I was weak and unrecovered, but I will blame Alex for this. Although revenge has already been taken, my thirst is not satisfied. This was my first love, and he blew the ashes away into the air.
