"It means, he's not my son. And I'm doing the best I can." The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them and I know I'll never be able to take them back.
Ophelia looks like she's been shot. The pain in her eyes is undeniable as they begin to fill with tears. "Can you not see that this kills me? And I know that tomorrow it'll be the same damn thing over again. You're not going to change anything."
I stand there facing her, not even sure what to do. I want to hold her but doubt she'd want that. "There's not much else I can say besides I'm sorry."
"Do you honestly think that sounds sincere?" She hastily wipes away her tears.
"Now you're complaining about an apology?" Here she is, fighting me to the very end. Well I can do the same. I head to the door, I just want this conversation to be over.
"Because you don't care, Eric."
"Ok, I don't." I shrug, giving up.
"Is that really all you have to say? Because if it is, I'm done." Her voice cracks.
'No!' The voice in my head shouts. 'No! No! No! No! No!' But that's not what I say as I open the door. "Then I guess we're done." It slams behind me.
What did I just do? I walk back to work in a daze. This can't be real. When I enter the leadership office, James is waiting to pounce.
"Where are those files?" He asks.
I realize I didn't even get what I had gone to the apartment for in the first place. "I forgot."
"You forgot?" He mocks. "Just like you forgot that that boy is not your son, he's Levi's."
There he goes again. Day in and day out he threatens me with Hudson. Claiming that he'll get rights to his grandson, that Ophelia and I are unfit to parent him.
I've tried to ignore him but it angers me. It's made me distant from the two people I care about most, and now it's made me lose them altogether.
"What are you going to do about it?" I hiss, finally having enough of his harassment.
He stares me down. "I've told you. I'm going to take that boy and raise him with his father, where he belongs."
"Well, good luck." I start stepping closer to him so we're face to face. I have several inches on him. "How are you going to suddenly claim that Levi is the father without people finding out about the rape?"
His eyes flash at the word rape. "What's wrong? Don't want your image or future here in Dauntless compromised?"
James reaches to punch me but I easily block it, grabbing his arm. "If you touch one hair on Hudson's head, I'll go straight to Max and make sure he knows everything your family has done."
He huffs and walks away. I take my seat at the table and wait for everyone to get back from lunch.
The day drags on. I'm irritated and snap at anyone who tries to talk to me. When I'm finally released at 9, I rush home hoping to make things right with Ophelia.
"Phe?" I call as I walk through the door but I'm met with silence.
I check our bedroom thinking maybe she's gone to sleep early. The room is empty and when I see Hudson's is too I get nervous. As I search the apartment I realize that none of their things are here anymore.
I head to the first place I think she'll be. Her mom's. Knocking on the door, I get no response so I head to Arri's. Ophelia isn't there and she says she hasn't seen her all day.
Cooper and Eleanor's place is next and neither of them know where Ophelia and Hudson are. They tell me to check Kenna's. So I head back to her apartment to try again.
